Résumé

Microbiology and biophysics are converging to advance our understanding of the mechanobiology of microorganisms. In this Review, Dufrene and Persat discuss the physical forces that bacteria experience in their natural environments and the structures that transmit these forces to a cell. Furthermore, they explore bacterial phenotypes influenced by mechanical inputs, including adhesion, motility and biofilm formation.

Bactérie

Le terme bactérie est un nom vernaculaire qui désigne certains organismes vivants microscopiques et procaryotes présents dans tous les milieux. Le plus souvent unicellulaires, elles sont parfois pluricellulaires (généralement filamenteuses), la plupart des espèces bactériennes ne vivant pas individuellement en suspension, mais en communautés complexes adhérant à des surfaces au sein d'un gel muqueux (biofilm). vignette|200px|Coques à gauche, Spirillum au centre, bacille à droite.

Biofilm

vignette|Lorsque le biofilm est indécelable, il forme un voile microbien. Lorsqu'il est suffisamment épais pour être visible à l'œil nu, il forme un tapis microbien (ici un biofilm autotrophe constitué de cyanobactéries). vignette|Cloître de l'abbaye du Thoronet. Les pierres exposées au ruissellement des eaux de pluie montrent des croûtes constituées de biofilms de lichens épilithiques, de cyanobactéries responsables de la biopatine noire, de parasites (virus ou microchampignons) qui attaquent ces bactéries photosynthétiques et d'autres micro-organismes qui s'en nourrissent.

Extracellular polymeric substance

Extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) are natural polymers of high molecular weight secreted by microorganisms into their environment. EPSs establish the functional and structural integrity of biofilms, and are considered the fundamental component that determines the physicochemical properties of a biofilm. EPS in the matrix of biofilms provides compositional support and protection of microbial communities from the harsh environments. Components of EPS can be of different classes of polysaccharides, lipids, nucleic acids, proteins, lipopolysaccharides, and minerals.
