In the context of smart cities, ensuring road safety is crucial due to increasing urbanization and the interconnected nature of contemporary urban environments. Leveraging innovative technologies is essential to mitigate risks and create safer communities. ...

Previously, space-time wave packets (STWPs) have been gen-erated in free space with reduced diffraction and a tunable group velocity by combining multiple frequency comb lines each carrying a single Bessel mode with a unique wave num-ber. It might be poten ...

Silicon photonics has emerged as a mature technology that is expected to play a key role in critical emerging applications, including very high data rate optical communications, distance sensing for autonomous vehicles, photonic-accelerated computing, and ...

We propose an all-optical switch based on an asymmetric directional coupler structure with epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) layer. The nonlinear optical properties the of ENZ layer are analyzed by hot-electron dynamics process, and the all-optical operating perform ...

The ever-growing need for distributed optical fibre sensors (DOFS) in numerous fields and applications demands continuous research towards the advancement of the existing sensing systems. The convenience in the field of DOFS lies in the several degrees of ...

Optical frequency combs are a series of phase-locked and equidistant laser lines in the spectral domain. In the time domain, they correspond to periodic pulse trains by the Fourier relation. The ability to shape optical combs and pulse trains is pivotal to ...

Novel two-dimensional metamaterials, known as metasurfaces, have emerged as a breakthrough platform for controlling electromagnetic wave properties at the nanoscale. These metasurfaces consist of subwavelength nanoantennas or so-called meta-atoms, which ca ...

Supercontinuum generation and soliton microcomb formation both represent key techniques for the formation of coherent, ultrabroad optical frequency combs, enabling the RF-to-optical link. Coherent supercontinuum generation typically relies on ultrashort pu ...

Microwave photonic technologies, which upshift the carrier into the optical domain, have facilitated the generation and processing of ultra-wideband electronic signals at vastly reduced fractional bandwidths. For microwave photonic applications such as rad ...

Diffractive optical elements with a large diffraction angle require feature sizes down to sub-wavelength dimensions, which require a rigorous electromagnetic computational model for calculation. However, the computational optimization of these diffractive ...

Refractive microlenses and microlens arrays are key components for many applications such as optical data communication, laser and medical devices, or cameras. In particular, refractive micro-optics enables the miniaturization of high-tech systems but also ...

Wireless communications are currently faced with two main challenges. The first challenge stems from the enormous number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices that transmit very small amounts of data. The second challenge is the need for ever-increasing data ...

On-chip Kerr frequency combs are potentially promising to enhance many applications because of their broad-band operation and chip-scale integration. Such combs offer various mutually coherent optical carriers that can potentially be used as both coherent ...

Many molecule bonds have vibration frequencies in the mid-infrared band. Thus, this band is of great interest to molecular spectroscopy, material processing and medical applications. However, many optical materials typically used for laser sources experien ...

This abstract presents an aluminum nitride (AlN) piezoelectric actuator for tuning optical resonance modes of silicon nitride photonic resonators. The AlN actuator is fabricated on top of a thick silicon dioxide cladding that encapsulates the nitride reson ...

Conventional input/output (IO) links consume power, independent of changes in the bandwidth demand by the system they are deployed in. As the system is designed to satisfy the peak bandwidth demand, most of the time the IO links are idle but still consumin ...

We report on the investigation of an approach for modelling light transmission through systems consisting of several jointed optical fibres, in which the analytical modelling of the waveguides was replaced by Finite Element Modelling (FEM) simulations. To ...

MEMS mirrors are currently used in many applications to steer beams of light. An area of continued research is developing mirrors with varifocal capability that allows the beam to be shaped and focused. In this work, we study the varifocal capability of a ...

We experimentally insert a flexible number of electro-optical (EO) comb lines into a Kerr frequency comb via EO modulation and demonstrate the use of combined Kerr and EO combs as light sources in coherent communications. The number of EO lines inserted in ...

Solitons are waveforms that preserve their shape while propagating, as a result of a balance of dispersion and nonlinearity(1,2). Soliton-based data transmission schemes were investigated in the 1980s and showed promise as a way of overcoming the limitatio ...
