Equivalent black carbon (eBC) mass concentration was measured with a commercial aethalometer (model AE33, Magee Scientific, Berkeley, USA). Measurements were performed onboard of the Swedish icebreaker (I/B) Oden from August to September 2018 as part of th ...

In Switzerland, hydropower is the main energy source and contributes to about 58.3% of the total production. The 2050 energy strategy aims to increase this share in the coming decades. This increase is a challenge for hydropower plants. The maintenance and ...

This dataset contains aerosol optical absorption coefficients at seven different wavelengths (babs(λ)), averaged to 10 min time resolution, measured during the year-long MOSAiC expedition from October 2019 to September 2020. The measurements were performed ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a key challenge for storage sustainability because it causes volume loss, affecting hydropower production capacity, dam safety, and flood management. A preliminary EPFL study proposed and studied an innovative device (called SEDM ...

In this thesis, we mainly utilize silver to construct the meta-atoms. Although suffering from easily oxidized, its excellent lossless property throughout the visible range makes it suitable for study. When preserved properly, silver-made metasurfaces can s ...

Hydroelectric power (HP) represents the main source of electricity in Africa, including the Democratic Republic of Congo. The demand for new dam construction is high, and major projects are currently progressing through planning and implementation stages. ...

Heightening very high gravity dams is one of the solutions considered as part of the energy transition and to mitigate the effects of climate change. The paper presents a stepwise approach to assess the potential for dam heightening and its impact on the h ...

The regulation of discharge and the retention of sediments in reservoirs disturb the natural water dynamics in residual flow stretches below reservoirs. However, a dynamic river morphology as well as near-natural hydrological hydrographs are fundamental ...

The LHCb Collaboration is constructing a large scintillating fibre tracker for a major upgrade of the experiment during the LHC long shutdown LS2 scheduled for 2019-2020. The detector is based on blue emitting Kuraray SCSF-78MJ fibres of 0.25 mm diameter, ...

Taking advantage of the withdrawal of some glaciers, several new dams will eventually be constructed in Switzerland in the coming years as a part of the 2050 energy strategy. The Trift dam, located in Berner Oberlands in Switzerland, is one of these new pr ...

Helical frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) appear in disubstituted allenes and even-n cumulenes. Chiral molecules are optically active, but while these molecules are single-handed chiral, p-orbitals of both helicities are present. Here we computationally ex ...

Reservoir sedimentation and consequently lack of storage volume and perturbation of the operation of intakes and bottom outlet is a key challenge affecting both hydropower production as well as dam safety and flood management. In the framework of a peer-re ...

Water impoundment by dams strongly affects the river natural flow regime, its attributes and the related ecosystem biodiversity. Fostering the sustainability of water uses e.g., hydropower systems thus implies searching for innovative operational policies ...

Detection and differentiation of enantiomers in small quantities are crucially important in many scientific fields, including biology, chemistry, and pharmacy. Chiral molecules manifest their handedness in their interaction with the chiral state of light ( ...

Energy recovery through local hydropower generation is a way of coping with high electricity expenditures in wastewater systems (WWS). Installing small hydropower plants within WWS is already in some countries eligible for incentive policy mechanisms to re ...

Bloch surface waves (BSWs) are surface electromagnetic modes that propagate at the interface between a multilayer substrate and a homogeneous external medium. The optical field of the surface mode is confined near the surface of the multilayer. This vertic ...

HYDROPOWER-EUROPE is a project selected by European Commission after the call H2020 LC-SC3-CC-4-2018, whose the scope is “bringing together stakeholders of the hydropower sector in a forum” to develop a roadmap of research and innovation for new hydropower ...

Intensive developments of plasmonic nanomaterials over recent decades have inspired appealing applications in biosensing, optical trapping, fluorescence enhancement and light harvesting in solar cells. These nanostructures supporting unique light-matter in ...

Supramolecular assemblies of cyanine dye molecules formed by weak van der Waals forces have gained immense attention for their distinct optical properties (high extinction coefficient, narrow absorption and photoluminescence line-width and small Stokes shi ...

Only 42 % of the mean annual production of large hydropower plants in the Swiss Alps is stored in their reservoirs. Once the reservoirs are full at the end of the summer semester, plants are operated as run-on-the-river in order to avoid spilling. A signif ...
