Type inference in the presence of first-class or "impredicative" second-order polymorphism a la System F has been an active research area for several decades, with original works dating back to the end of the 80s. Yet, until now many basic problems remain ...

Type-level programming is becoming more and more popular in the realm of functional programming. However, the combination of type-level programming and subtyping remains largely unexplored in practical programming languages. This paper presents match types ...

Many programming languages in the OO tradition now support pattern matching in some form. Historical examples include Scala and Ceylon, with the more recent additions of Java, Kotlin, TypeScript, and Flow. But pattern matching on generic class hierarchies ...

Formal verification of real-world software systems remains challenging for a number of reasons, including lack of automation, friction in specifying properties, and limited support for the diverse programming paradigms used in industry. In this thesis we m ...

Scala has been developed as a language that deeply integrates with the Java ecosystem. It offers seamless interoperability with existing Java libraries. Since the Scala compiler targets Java bytecode, Scala programs have access to high-performance runtimes ...

In this thesis, we present Stainless, a verification system for an expressive subset of the Scala language. Our system is based on a dependently-typed language and an algorithmic type checking procedure which ensures total correctness. We rely on SMT solve ...

We present a new approach for specifying and verifying resource utilization of higher-order functional programs that use lazy evaluation and memoization. In our approach, users can specify the desired resource bound as templates with numerical holes e.g. a ...

In this thesis, we explore techniques for the development and verification of programs in a high-level, expressive, and safe programming language. Our programs can express problems over unbounded domains and over recursive and mutable data structures. We p ...

Performance critical software is almost always developed in C, as programmers do not trust high-level languages to deliver the same reliable performance. This is bad because low-level code in unsafe languages attracts security vulnerabilities and because d ...

Permission systems are the main defense that mobile platforms, such as Android and iOS, offer to users to protect their private data from prying apps. However, due to the tension between usability and control, such systems have several limitations that oft ...

Production compilers for programming languages face multiple requirements. They should be correct, as we rely on them to produce code. They should be fast, in order to provide a good developer experience. They should also be easy to maintain and evolve. Th ...

Algebraic data types and pattern matching are key features of functional programming languages. Exhaustivity checking of pattern matching is a safety belt that defends against unmatched exceptions at runtime and boosts type safety. However, the presence of ...

This article investigates the evolution of data quality issues from traditional structured data managed in relational databases to Big Data. In particular, the paper examines the nature of the relationship between Data Quality and several research coordina ...

We describe techniques for synthesis and verification of recursive functional programs over unbounded domains. Our techniques build on top of an algorithm for satisfiability modulo recursive functions, a framework for deductive synthesis, and complete synt ...

The sequencing of complete genomes has accelerated biomedical research by providing information about the overall coding capacity of bacterial chromosomes. The original TB annotation resulted in putative functional assignment of similar to 60% of the genes ...

This thesis explores the use of specifications for the construction of correct programs. We go beyond their standard use as run-time assertions, and present algorithms, techniques and implementations for the tasks of 1) program verification, 2) declarative ...

We propose a new type-theoretic foundation of Scala and languages like it: the Dependent Object Types (DOT) calculus. DOT models Scala’s path-dependent types, abstract type members and its mixture of nominal and structural typing through the use of refineme ...

To support verification of expressive properties of functional programs, we consider algebraic style specifications that may relate multiple user-defined functions, and compare multiple invocations of a function for different arguments. We present decision ...

Systems on Chip (SoCs) and Systems in Package (SiPs) are key parts of a continuously broadening range of products, from chip cards and mobile phones to cars. Besides an increasing amount of digital hardware and software for data processing and storage, the ...

We describe a family of decision procedures that extend the decision procedure for quantifier-free constraints on recursive algebraic data types (term algebras) to support recursive abstraction functions. Our abstraction functions are catamorphisms (term a ...
