Aims. We derived galaxy colour selections from Euclid and ground-based photometry, aiming to accurately define background galaxy samples in cluster weak-lensing analyses. These selections have been implemented in the Euclid data analysis pipelines for gala ...

We conduct two survey experiments to study which information people choose to consume and how it affects their beliefs. In the first experiment, respondents choose between optimistic and pessimistic article headlines related to the COVID-19 pandemic and ar ...

Measuring conditional dependencies among the variables of a network is of great interest to many disciplines. This paper studies some shortcomings of the existing dependency measures in detecting direct causal influences or their lack of ability for group ...

The design of structurally defined heteroleptic coordination cages is a challenging task, and only few examples are known to date. Here we describe a selection approach that allowed the identification of a novel hexanuclear Pd cage containing two types of ...

Cross-validation is commonly used to select the recommendation algorithms that will generalize best on yet unknown data. Yet, in many situations the available dataset used for cross-validation is scarce and the selected algorithm might not be the best suit ...

Lande and Arnold's approach to quantifying natural selection has become a standard tool in evolutionary biology due to its simplicity and generality. It treats linear and nonlinear selection in two separate frameworks, generating coefficients of selection ...

Background Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a complex multifactorial disease influenced by genetic and environmental risk factors. An example for the latter is the regular use of combined oral contraceptives (CC), which increases the risk to develop VTE by ...

In developing partial least squares calibration models, selecting the number of latent variables used for their construction to minimize both model bias and model variance remains a challenge. Several metrics exist for incorporating these trade-offs, but t ...

Discovering new drugs to treat tuberculosis more efficiently and to overcome multidrug resistance is a world health priority. To find novel antitubercular agents several approaches have been used in various institutions worldwide, including target-based ap ...

We present an algorithm for determining the nature of stochastic processes and their parameters based on the analysis of time series of inertial errors. The algorithm is suitable mainly (but not only) for situations where several stochastic processes are s ...

Genetic adaptation to different environmental conditions is expected to lead to large differences between populations at selected loci, thus providing a signature of positive selection. Whereas balancing selection can maintain polymorphisms over long evolu ...

Intrusion detection is frequently used as a second line of defense in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs). In this paper we examine how to properly use classification methods in intrusion detection for MANETs. In order to do so we evaluate five supervised clas ...

All processes associated with cellular function are likely to contribute to disease. Particularly in the cancer field, most major therapeutic innovations have originated from the elucidation of basic molecular mechanisms by academic researchers. Recent bre ...

The evolution of altruism is a fundamental and enduring puzzle in biology. In a seminal paper Hamilton showed that altruism can be selected for when rb − c>0, where c is the fitness cost to the altruist, b is the fitness benefit to the beneficiary, and r i ...

Combining several classifiers has proved to be an effective machine learning technique. Two concepts clearly influence the performances of an ensemble of classifiers: the diversity between classifiers and the individual accuracies of the classifiers. In th ...

In this paper we describe a new computational model of switching between path-planning and cue-guided navigation strategies. It is based on three main assumptions: (i) the strategies are mediated by separate memory systems that learn independently and in p ...

The identification of all protein targets of a small molecule drug, i.e. target deconvolution, provides the basis for understanding its beneficial or deleterious actions. Target deconvolution remains a major and often problematic task within the biotechnol ...

In cooperative multiagent systems, agents interact to solve tasks. Global dynamics of multiagent teams result from local agent interactions, and are complex and difficult to predict. Evolutionary computation has proven a promising approach to the design of ...

The problem of feature selection has been thoroughly analyzed in the context of pattern classification, with the purpose of avoiding the curse of dimensionality. However, in the context of multimodal signal processing, this problem has been studied less. O ...
