The global construction industry contributes to 37% of carbon emissions associated to both building operations and construction. To help achieve the net-zero targets set by 2050, it is mandated to achieve a 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030. As we ...

Solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth for a period of one hour contains more energy than that consumed by mankind over an entire year. Some of this solar energy is already collected by photovoltaic cells to cover the electricity needs of buildi ...

Designing architectural façades that allow sufficient daylight to create visually comfortable and pleasant environments is a challenging aspect of building design. It requires accounting for visual comfort and discomfort glare risks and understanding the f ...

While the influence of a glare source's spectrum on sensitivity to discomfort glare has been demonstrated repeatedly under electric light conditions, it has not yet been studied under actual daylit conditions. To investigate the influence of spectral alter ...

: Occupants’ visual comfort in an indoor space strongly depend on the quantity and quality of the daylight inside the space which can be altered with the type of window glazing. In this study, we compared the visual comfort perception of participants with ...

With the purpose of reducing the heating energy in buildings, it is common practice to install energy-efficient windows to increase the thermal insulation of a façade. These insulating glass units (IGIJ) include a thin silver coating acting as an infrared ...

The spectral sensitivity of the average human eye in photopic conditions is represented by the photopic luminosity function V (λ). The CIE has established the photopic luminosity functions for the 2o and 10o visual fields for a standard observer applicable ...

A recent study on the glare protection performance of electrochromic (EC) glazing showed that visible transmittance levels lower than 0.6% are necessary to achieve comfortable situations for sun positions, that were close to the central field of view. Howe ...

Avoiding discomfort glare is one of the critical aspects of maintaining visual comfort, which significantly influences occupants' overall satisfaction with their indoor environment. Discomfort glare prediction models have been developed for various lightin ...

The adaptable transmittance of electrochromic glazing allows to control the solar radiation entering buildings, yet the level of transmittance needed to protect from glare is still an unanswered question. To bridge this gap, this study evaluates the level ...

Triple glazed low-e coated insulating glass units with argon filling of five different suppliers on the European market with a declared thermal transmittance in the undisturbed centre of glass (Ug-value) of 0.6 W/m(2)K have been purchased from resellers an ...

The present invention concerns an insulating glazing unit (1) adapted to let pass electromagnetic radiation with low transmission loss for receiving electromagnetic radiation. The insulating glazing unit (1) comprises: a first windowpane (3) defining at le ...

The impact of daylighting strategies on a building’s carbon emissions have so far been assessed mostly based on the building’s use phase and their resulting operational benefits, overlooking embodied carbon emissions of material production, construction, m ...

Well-designed ventilated air-spaces behind external claddings in the building envelope can potentially reduce thermal energy flow in the entire wall structure. In this study, the impact of the dynamic thermo-hydraulic behavior of the flow in the naturally ...

Objective Temperature–color interaction effects on subjective perception and physiological responses are investigated using a novel hybrid experimental method combining thermal and visual stimuli from real and virtual reality (VR) environments, respectivel ...

This paper presents the combined effect of indoor temperature (19 degrees C, 22 degrees C, and 26 degrees C) and colored glazing (blue, orange, and neutral) on visual perception of daylight. Experiments were performed in an office-like test room, in which ...

A simulation model and an experimental characterization of energy saving glazing transparent to mobile communication frequency up to 40 GHz is presented. A previous study showed that laser structured energy efficient windows with a frequency selective surf ...

The inception of object-oriented programming introduces a category of bugs related to object construction: initialization errors. Every newly created object goes through several initialization states: starting from a state where all fields are uninitialize ...

Within the scope of a broader research project about daylight and temperature interaction effects on human responses, this paper investigates how daylight transmitted through spectrally selective glazing (blue, orange and a reference neutral) affects therm ...

This paper investigates the impact of transmittance level and layout variations of semi-transparent photovoltaics (STPV) on both energy performance and occupancy-based visual and thermal comfort, simulating a reference office with a fully south-oriented gl ...
