We investigate the stability of the steady vertical path and the emerging trajectories of a buoyancy -driven annular disk as the diameter of its central hole is varied. The steady and axisymmetric wake associated with the steady vertical path of the disk, ...

In this thesis we study stability from several viewpoints. After covering the practical importance, the rich history and the ever-growing list of manifestations of stability, we study the following. (i) (Statistical identification of stable dynamical syste ...

We study the stability of laminar wakes past three-dimensional rectangular prisms. The width-to-height ratio is set to W/H = 1.2, while the length-to-height ratio 1/6 < L/H < 3 covers a wide range of geometries from thin plates to elongated Ahmed bodies. F ...

We study numerically and theoretically the gravity-driven flow of a viscous liquid film coating the inner side of a horizontal cylindrical tube and surrounding a shear-free dynamically inert gaseous core. The liquid-gas interface is prone to the Rayleigh-P ...

This thesis presents advancements in the understanding of the plasma conditions leading to the excitation and saturation of the Edge Harmonic Oscillations (EHOs) observed during QH-mode operation in tokamak plasmas. Such operations represent a safer altern ...

Small-scale turbomachinery is increasingly used in carbon-free energy conversion systems, such as commercial or domestic scale heat pumps, fuels cells for transportation and waste heat recovery. The usage of aerodynamic bearings allows the design of compac ...

Incipient valley formation in mountainous landscapes is often associated with their presence at a regular spacing under diverse hydroclimatic forcings. Here we provide a formal linear stability theory for a landscape evolution model (LEM) representing the ...

One approach to understand the chaotic dynamics of nonlinear dissipative systems is the study of non-chaotic yet dynamically unstable invariant solutions embedded in the system's chaotic attractor. The significance of zero-dimensional unstable fixed points ...

Thermal convection in an inclined layer between two parallel walls kept at different fixed temperatures is studied for fixed Prandtl number . Depending on the angle of inclination and the imposed temperature difference, the flow exhibits a large variety of ...

In a channel flow with a sudden expansion, whether for three-dimensional (3-D) pipe and channel flows, or for two-dimensional (2-D) channel flow, it is known that increasing the Reynolds number beyond a critical value induces a symmetry breaking Pitchfork ...

The flow of a thin film coating the underside of an inclined substrate is studied. We measure experimentally spatial growth rates and compare them to the linear stability analysis of a flat film modelled by the lubrication equation. When forced by a statio ...

Transient cavities generated from unsteady leading-edge cavitation may undergo aggressive collapses which are responsible for cavitation erosion. In this paper, we studied the hydrodynamic mechanisms of these events in the leading edge cavitation formed ov ...

A finite groove approach (FGA), based on the finite element method (FEM), is used for analyzing the static and dynamic behavior of spiral-grooved aerodynamic journal bearings at different eccentricities, number of grooves, and compressibility numbers. The ...

When laminar shear flows in large wall-bounded domains transition to turbulence, the flow exhibits spatio-temporally chaotic dynamics. Despite its chaotic dynamics, the flow may self-organize into characteristic spatially periodic patterns of unknown origi ...

In solid mechanics, linear structures often exhibit (local) nonlinear behavior when close to failure. For instance, the elastic deformation of a structure becomes plastic after being deformed beyond recovery. To properly assess such problems in a real-life ...

Among hydrodynamically unstable flows, the amplifier-flows are characterized by their large amplification potential in presence of external noise. Since amplifiers do not have an intrinsic dynamics, a chosen forcing can be applied to eventually control the ...

We investigate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of a thin viscous film coating the inside of a spherical substrate. The aim of this work is to find and characterize the instability pattern in this spherical geometry. In contrast to the Rayleigh-Taylor insta ...

This thesis investigates the motion and breakup of droplets in low-Reynolds-number flows, focusing on two aspects. In the first part, we study the breakup of droplets in subcritical flow conditions, when there exists a linearly stable solution for the drop ...

The complex interaction between the atmospheric boundary layer and the heterogeneous land surface is typically not resolved in numerical models approximating the turbulent heat exchange processes. In this study, we consider the effect of the land surface h ...

In eukaryotic cells, motor proteins (MPs) bind to cytoskeletal filaments and move along them in a directed manner generating active stresses. During cell division a spindle structure of overlapping antiparallel microtubules forms whose stability and dynami ...
