Situational awareness strategies are essential for the reliable and secure operation of the electric power grid which represents critical infrastructure in modern society. With the rise of converter-interfaced renewable generation and the consequent shift ...

The electron density close to the extraction grids and the co-extracted electrons represent a crucial issue when operating negative ion sources for fusion reactors. An excessive electron density in the plasma expansion region can indeed inhibit the negativ ...

Microscopic visualisation of optically transparent samples has been a topic of interest for several decades. Features such as density or chemical composition can influence the optical phase of transmitted light, and phase contrast can reveal these structur ...

Eccentricity has emerged as a potentially useful tool for helping to identify the origin of black hole mergers. However, eccentric templates can be computationally very expensive owing to the large number of harmonics, making statistical analyses to distin ...

Carrier-envelope phase (CEP) detection of ultrashort optical pulses and low-energy waveform field sampling have recently been demonstrated using direct time-domain methods that exploit optical-field photoemission from plasmonic nanoantennas. These devices ...

We present optical tomography methods for a 3D refractive index reconstruction of weakly scattering objects using LED light sources. We are able to record holograms by minimizing the optical path difference between the signal and reference beams while sepa ...

Fault diagnosis plays an essential role in reducing the maintenance costs of rotating machinery manufacturing systems. In many real applications of fault detection and diagnosis, data tend to be imbalanced, meaning that the number of samples for some fault ...

Nowadays, efficient and remote health monitoring is becoming increasingly important, given both the ageing of population and the combined action of an increase in obesity level and cardiovascular diseases. The healthcare industry is becoming more reliant o ...

Highly energy-efficient wireless sensor nodes are a prerequisite for a sustainable operation of the Internet of things. Therefore, classical approaches for system design based on digital signal processing are not a viable solution, but system design has to ...

The low-light performance of a CMOS image sensor (CIS) is one of the most important performance metrics in a camera, whether it is used in products for consumer electronics or in an image-acquisition system for machine vision or the Internet-of-Things (IoT ...

We introduce a lock-in method to increase the phase contrast in incoherent differential phase contrast (DPC) imaging. This method improves the phase sensitivity by the analog removal of the background. The use of a smart pixel detector with in-pixel signal ...

We introduce a lock-in method to increase the phase contrast in incoherent Differential Phase Contrast (DPC) imaging. The use of a smart pixel detector with in-pixel signal demodulation, paired with synchronized illumination, provides the basis of a bit-ef ...

The benefits and limitations inherent to the 2D post-processing of measurements from Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers are investigated from a fundamental point of view. In a preliminary step, the impact of curve fitting on the precision of the estim ...

This article presents a 4-to-5 GHz LC oscillator operating at 4.2K for quantum computing applications. The phase noise (PN) specification of the oscillator is derived based on the control fidelity for a single-qubit operation. To reveal the substantial gap ...

Noninvasive estimation of axon diameter with diffusion MRI holds the potential to investigate the dynamic properties of the brain network and pathology of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent studies use powder averaging to account for complex white matter a ...

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are an emerging sensor technology capable of detecting individual incident photons, and capturing their time-of-arrival with high timing precision. While these sensors were limited to singlepixel or low-resolution dev ...

Optical retrieval of the structure of transparent objects at the nanoscale requires adapted techniques capable of probing their interaction with light. Here, we considered a method based on calibration of the defocusing with partially coherent illumination ...

The aim of this thesis is to implement, analyze and improve the selected low noise clock generation and distribution techniques for ADC implementations. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on the sampling phase generation and distr ...

Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

Photosensing has proven to be highly useful in biomedical research and medical care. Being able to detect and quantify the light emitted by fluorescent or bioluminescent reporters has significantly participated in the development of new cancer treatments a ...
