The overarching objective of this thesis is extending and adapting the set of computational tools available for describing molecular precursors of organic semiconductors. The research presented within develops adhering to three principle goals: (1) provide ...

Quantum-mechanical embedding methods have in recent years gained significant interest and may now be applied to predict a wide range of molecular properties calculated at different levels of theory. To reach a high level of accuracy in embedding methods, b ...

We present a new QM-/QM/MM-based Model for calculating molecular properties and excited states,of solute-solvent systems. We denote this new approach the polarizable density embedding (PDE) model, and represents an extension of our previously developed pol ...

We extended a previously developed force matching approach to systems with covalent QM/MM boundaries and describe its user-friendly implementation in the publicly available software package CPMD. We applied this approach to the challenging case of the reti ...

The description of ground state charge-transfer complexes is highly challenging. Illustrative examples include large overestimations of charge-transfer by local and semi-local density functional approximations as well as inaccurate binding energies. It is ...

Ab initio electronic structure methods have reached a satisfactory accuracy for the calculation of static properties, but remain too expensive for quantum dynamical calculations. Recently, an efficient semiclassical method was proposed to evaluate the accu ...

Quantum chemical methods are important tools for the predictions of electronic structure and energetics of molecules providing the interpretation of spectroscopic experiments and reaction mechanisms. In this thesis, density functional theory (DFT) and wave ...

A comprehensive theoretical study on the electronic absorption spectra of a representative group of organic dyes (L0, D4, D5, C217, and JK2) employed in dye-sensitized solar cell devices is reported. A benchmark evaluation on different time-dependent densi ...

A semi-empirical potential for ferromagnetic bcc iron that also models the co-linear magnetic moment of each atom, has been applied to clusters and surfaces. Surface energies of low index facets, surface relaxation and magnetic moment are calculated and co ...

We propose monolayer epitaxial graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as ultimate thickness covalent spacers for magnetoresistive junctions. Using a first-principles approach, we investigate the structural, magnetic, and spin transport properties of s ...

Recently, we have introduced a scheme for optimizing atom-based nonlocal external potentials within the framework of d. functional theory (DFT) in order to systematically improve the description of mol. properties [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 153004 (2004); J. Ch ...

We have measured the rovibrational levels in the electronic ground state of the water molecule at the previously inaccessible energies above 26000 cm-1. The use of laser double-resonance overtone excitation combined with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) ph ...
