We present a numerical model for the approximation of multiphase flows with free surfaces and strong interfacial effects. The model relies on the multiphase incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and includes surface tension effects on the interfaces betw ...

The dynamical properties of water molecules confinedin the unidirectionalhydrophilic nanopores of AlPO4-54 are investigated withquasi-elastic neutron scattering as a function of temperature downto 118 K. AlPO4-54 has among the largest pores known foralumin ...

Diffusion is one of the most important phenomena studied in science ranging from physics to biology and, in abstract form, even in social sciences. In the field of materials science, diffusion in crystalline solids is of particular interest as it plays a p ...

We consider the problem of nonparametric estimation of the drift and diffusion coefficients of a Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE), based on n independent replicates {Xi(t) : t is an element of [0 , 1]}13 d B(t), where alpha is an element of {0 , 1} a ...

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) have seen a rapid development over the past decade. However, wide diffusion of high level CAVs is still decades to come, and will depend on many technological, policy and public acceptance factors. Merging a traditio ...

The application of microfluidics in the field of surface-based assays and more specifically, the spatial molecular profiling of tumor tissues has gained a lot of interest, especially with the increased interest in personalized medicine and targeted therapy ...

In this work we study microwimmers, whether colloids or polymers, embedded in bulk or in confinement. We explicitly consider hydrodynamic interactions and simulate the swimmers via an implementation inspired by the squirmer model. Concerning the surroundin ...

Biophysical models of diffusion in white matter have been center-stage over the past two decades and are essentially based on what is now commonly referred to as the "Standard Model" (SM) of non-exchanging anisotropic compartments with Gaussian diffusion. ...

Knowledge of oxygen diffusion in garnet is crucial for a correct interpretation of oxygen isotope signatures in natural samples. A series of experiments was undertaken to determine the diffusivity of oxygen in garnet, which remains poorly constrained. The ...

This paper deals with a new analytical model for microfluidic passive mixers. Two common approaches already exist for such a purpose. On the one hand, the resolution of the advection-diffusion-reaction equation (ADRE) is the first one and the closest to ph ...

The quantification of uncertainties can be particularly challenging for problems requiring long-time integration as the structure of the random solution might considerably change over time. In this respect, dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) is very a ...

We present a numerical model for the simulation of 3D mono-dispersed sediment dynamics in a Newtonian flow with free surfaces. The physical model is a macroscopic model for the transport of sediment based on a sediment concentration with a single momentum ...

The diffusion limit of kinetic systems has been subject of numerous studies since prominent works of Lebowitz et al. [1] and van Kampen [2]. More recently, the topic has seen a fresh interest from the rarefied gas simulation perspective. In particular, Fok ...

While hydro-mechanical coupling in rocks is generally well understood, exotic rock poroelastic responses-such as unexpected dependence to fluid diffusion time and low skeleton moduli-have been reported. Hydro-mechanical coupling, or poroelasticity, explain ...

A theoretical framework describing the hydrodynamic interactions between a passive particle and an active medium in out-of-equilibrium systems predicts long-range Levy flights for the diffusing particle driven by the density of the active component. Browni ...

This thesis presents four essays providing novel empirical and theoretical insights on the incentives and institutional structures that favor knowledge production and diffusion. The first two studies analyze these processes in the realm of scientific resea ...

Kinetic equilibrium reconstruction (KER) in tokamaks is the solution of the free-boundary MHD equilibrium that best fits the external magnetic measurements and the internal plasma profiles as imposed from modeling and/or available internal measurements. In ...

We study the phenomenon of intransitivity in models of dice and voting. First, we follow a recent thread of research for n-sided dice with pairwise ordering induced by the probability, relative to 1/2, that a throw from one die is higher than the other. We ...

The thermal coarsening of titanate nanowires was investigated from room temperature to 1000 degrees C by AFM, SEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy. Phase transformation kinetics and the external morphology were studied in two configurations: i) as individual an ...

In the field of plasma physics, suprathermal ions are encountered e.g. in astrophysical jets, the solar wind, as well as fusion plasmas, where they originate from neutral beam injection or fusion reactions. One aspect of shared interest with astrophysical ...
