Herein, machine learning (ML) models using multiple linear regression (MLR), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF) and artificial neural network (ANN) are developed and compared to predict the output features viz. specific capacitance (Csp), ...

Radar rainfall nowcasting has mostly been applied to relatively large (often rural) domains (e.g., river basins), although rainfall nowcasting in small urban areas is expected to be more challenging. Here, we selected 80 events with high rainfall intensiti ...

Outliers in discrete choice response data may result from misclassification and misreporting of the response variable and from choice behaviour that is inconsistent with modelling assumptions (e.g. random utility maximisation). In the presence of outliers, ...

The study of regional trends in the rural-urban fertility gradient helps us to understand the pace of completion of the fertility transition and the geography of urban growth in the global South. We question whether the hypothesized inverted U-shaped evolu ...

In developing countries, the waterborne transmission of hepatitis E virus (HEV), caused by HEV genotypes 1 (HEV-1) and 2 (HEV-2), leads to the onset of large recurrent outbreaks. HEV infections are of particular concern among pregnant women, due to very hi ...

Mountain regions are considered to be the natural "water towers" of the world due to their importance as sources of many rivers. Reliable tools to estimate the availability and variability of streamflows in such regions are still rare. In this context, the ...

A new adaptive path interpolation method has been recently developed as a simple and versatile scheme to calculate exactly the asymptotic mutual information of Bayesian inference problems defined on dense factor graphs. These include random linear and gene ...

Rain-on-snow (ROS) events cause repeated flooding in many mountainous regions with a seasonal snow cover. The complex interaction of processes across spatial scales makes it difficult to accurately predict the effect of snow cover on runoff formation for a ...

The extractive sector now holds an even more predominant position for national economies following the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. The sector can make significant contributions to the achievement of a large number of these Goals. ...

The drop size distribution (DSD) describes the microstructure of liquid precipitation. The high variability of the DSD reflects the variety of microphysical processes controlling raindrop properties and affects the retrieval of rainfall. An analysis of the ...

Although a differential sensitivity of cholera dynamics to climate variability has been reported in the spatially heterogeneous megacity of Dhaka, Bangladesh, the specific patterns of spread of the resulting risk within the city remain unclear. We build on ...

With 80% of its population living in cities, Latin America is one of the most urbanized regions in the planet. Its urban areas are characterized by rapid transformations that entail urban sprawl and the subsequent environmental impacts, social segregation ...

As in all semi-arid regions, Tambarga, a small village surrounded by national parks in the landlocked country of Burkina Faso, is affected by the seasonality of the local hydrology. Seasonal and spatial variability of rainfall shapes the livelihoods of rur ...

Worldwide, almost 50,000 dams over 15 m height have been built during the last six decades with an aggregated storage capacity of 6,000 km3. The fact that large dams, by increasing irrigation and hydroelectricity production, can sustain development and red ...

The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) for linear regression exploits the geometric interplay of the

\ell_2

-data error objective and the

\ell_1

-norm constraint to arbitrarily select sparse models. Guiding this uninformed selection ...

Parametric option pricing models are largely used in Finance. These models capture several features of asset price dynamics. However, their pricing performance can be significantly enhanced when they are combined with nonparametric learning approaches that ...

In this dissertation, we explore the potential of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in an original context, the small agriculture of Developing Countries (DCs). Our goal is to confront an emerging technology with a concrete problem of world-wide dimensions, ...

The World is facing major challenges regarding environmental threats, resource constraints and the large unbalance of wealth among developing and developed countries. Energy engineering is at the core of the actions to be undertaken to meet these challenge ...
