In computational hydraulics models, predicting bed topography and bedload transport with sufficient accuracy remains a significant challenge. An accurate assessment of a river's sediment transport rate necessitates a prior understanding of its bed topograp ...

We present a simple, vertically-explicit 2D model of river bank erosion that also takes the effect of sediment stabilization by plant roots into account. The model is solved in quasi-analytical form for an exemplary non-stationary hydrograph temporal signa ...

Sediment transport in geophysical boundary layer flows has relevance to a broad spectrum of sciences ranging from the physical and chemical, to the biological, ecological and geological. Advances in sediment transport modelling and prediction strongly suff ...

A turbidity current is a turbulent, particle-laden gravity current that is driven by density differences resulting from the presence of suspended sediment particles. The current travels downslope, bearing a large amount of sediment over a great distance, a ...

Incipient valley formation in mountainous landscapes is often associated with their presence at a regular spacing under diverse hydroclimatic forcings. Here we provide a formal linear stability theory for a landscape evolution model (LEM) representing the ...

Steep streams on rough beds are generally characterised by supercritical flow conditions under which antidunes can develop and migrate over time. In this paper, we present flume experiments that we conducted to investigate the variability of antidune geome ...

High-resolution lake and reservoir bathymetric surveys can pinpoint locations that may experience underwater landslides (subaquatic sedimentary mass movements). These can pose a risk to underwater and shoreline infrastructure. This paper outlines an approa ...

Aeolian transport controls landform formations on Earth and other planets and crucially affects the atmospheric system. With elaborate wind tunnel measurements, we find that the aerodynamic entrainment rate follows a yet unreported exponential increase in ...

The technical capacity to predict the erosion process is instrumental for the optimization of the runner designs and operation strategies of hydroelectric plants. A multiscale model of erosion recently formulated by the authors and validated on a laborator ...

River bank (RB) erosion is a global issue aecting livelihoods and properties of millions of people. However, it has not received enough attention in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), i.e., the world’s third largest delta, compared to salinity intrusion an ...

Floodplains downstream of dams with constant residual flow discharge often lack sediment supply and periodic inundation due to the absence of flood events. At the Sarine floodplain in Fribourg, western Switzerland, an artificial flood was released from Ros ...

Hydropower has been identified as a key technology to mitigate climate change due to its very low lifecycle greenhouse gas emission intensity and its capacity to integrate intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the electrical gri ...

Environmental transport processes are highly coupled with the shape of landscapes. Modern catchment analysis with high-resolution data and huge computational powers demand more detailed within-cell metrics for surface evolution modeling. This dissertation ...

Erosive wear of hydraulic machines is a common issue, which results in efficiency degradation, the enhancement of cavitation, and the need for expensive maintenance. Although numerical simulations of the erosion process could be very useful, both for under ...

Recently, Jafarnejad, Franca, Pfister, and Schleiss [2017. Time-based failure analysis of compressed riverbank riprap. Journal of Hydraulic Research, 55(2), 224–235. doi: 10.1080/00221686.2016.1212940] presented an experimental study on the stability of co ...

The hydroabrasive erosion of hydraulic machine components, especially Pelton buckets and needles, is a widespread problem that entails significant costs. The multiscale nature of the process renders its simulation very computationally demanding unless spec ...

The term “ecosystem engineering” emerged in the 1990s and is commonly used to refer to the activities of larger organisms like beavers and trees in rivers and streams. The focus on larger organisms may be motivated by their more visible effects on the envi ...

In-stream open check dams are essential for flood protection at mountain rivers that are characterized by steep slopes (>1%) and sediment-laden flood discharges. These structures comprise an opening acting as a lateral or vertical flow contraction to force ...

Leading-edge cavitation is responsible of the generation of transient cavities, usually made of clouds of bubbles. These transient cavities travel downstream to high-pressure regions and collapse violently, leading to noise and vibration as well as erosion ...

Gravity currents are density-driven flows that are able to transport high amounts of sediment and are responsible of great geomorphic changes. Moreover they can have severe repercussions on the environment since they are conveyors of substances, e.g. pollu ...
