Governments choose to issue risky or riskless debt depending on the nature of the stochastic process of output. We use Brownian motion and Poisson shocks a modeling method in the literature on corporate default known as Levy processes to approximate a deco ...

We consider Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) for the numerical solution of the electrophysiology of the atria, which in this work is modeled by means of the bidomain equations on thin surfaces. First, we consider the bidomain equations coupled with the Roger-Mc ...

The topic of this thesis is the study of several stochastic control problems motivated by sailing races. The goal is to minimize the travel time between two locations, by selecting the fastest route in face of randomly changing weather conditions, such as ...

For the group of endo-permutation modules of a finite p-group, there is a surjective reduction homomorphism from a complete discrete valuation ring of characteristic 0 to its residue field of characteristic p. We prove that this reduction map always has a ...

We have developed an in situ method to calibrate optical tweezers experiments and simultaneously measure the size of the trapped particle or the viscosity of the surrounding fluid. The positional fluctuations of the trapped particle are recorded with a hig ...

This paper deals with the initial value problem for a class of degenerate nonlinear parabolic equations on a bounded domain in R-N for N >= 2 with the Dirichlet boundary condition. The assumptions ensure that u (math) 0 is a stationary solution and its sta ...

Randomization is a fundamental tool used in many theoretical and practical areas of computer science. We study here the role of randomization in the area of submodular function maximization. In this area, most algorithms are randomized, and in almost all c ...

At timescales once deemed immeasurably small by Einstein, the random movement of Brownian particles in a liquid is expected to be replaced by ballistic motion. So far, an experimental verification of this prediction has been out of reach due to a lack of i ...

Observation of the Brownian motion of a small probe interacting with its environment provides one of the main strategies for characterizing soft matter. Essentially, two counteracting forces govern the motion of the Brownian particle. First, the particle i ...

This work is a study of three interacting particle systems that are modified versions of the contact process. The contact process is a spin system defined on a graph and is commonly taken as a model for the spread of an infection in a population; transmiss ...

We study the optimal strategy for a sailboat to reach an upwind island under the hypothesis that the wind direction fluctuates according to a Brownian motion and the wind speed is constant. The work is motivated by a concrete problem which typically arises ...

Let X = {X(t); t ∈ RN} be a (N,d) fractional Brownian motion in Rd of index H ∈ (0,1). We study the local time of X for all temporal dimensions N and spatial dimensions d for which local time exist. We obtain two main results : R1. If we denote by Lx(I) th ...

We study the interface of the symmetric multitype contact process on Z. In this process, each site of Z is either empty or occupied by an individual of one of two species. Each individual dies with rate 1 and attempts to give birth with rate 2R lambda; the ...

This thesis describes measurements of Brownian motion of a colloidal particle using optical trapping. Two aspects are investigated: (i) influence of inertial effects on Brownian motion, and (ii) effect of the optical trap on Brownian motion. The first part ...

We study the renormalization group flow in strongly interacting field theories in the fermion sector corresponding to the transition from theories without a Lorentz invariance at high energies to theories with an approximate Lorentz invariance in the infra ...

Thermal position fluctuations of a colloidal particle in an optical trap are measured with microsecond resolution using back-focal-plane interferometry. The mean-square displacement MSD(t) and power spectral density are in excellent agreement with the theo ...

We show that for a voter model on {0,1}Z corresponding to a random walk with kernel p(·) and starting from unanimity to the right and opposing unanimity to the left, a tight interface between 0's and 1's exists if p(·) has second moments but does not if p( ...

We provide a detailed study of the interplay between the different interactions which appear in the Brownian motion of a micronsized sphere immersed in a viscoelastic fluid measured with optical trapping interferometry. To explore a wide range of viscous, ...

The precision measurement of position has a long-standing tradition in physics. Cavendish's verification of the universal law of gravitation using a torsion pendulum, Perrin's confirmation of the atomic hypothesis via the precise measurement of the Brownia ...

We demonstrate a method to determine the Brownian motion and the diffusion coefficient of a nanoparticle in water in a plane that is parallel to a solid boundary and as function of the distance normal to that boundary by using an optical tweezers instrumen ...
