The number of transient operations in hydraulic machinery connected to power grid, notably start-ups and shut-downs, has observed a substantial increase in recent decades, primarily driven by the global shift toward intermittent renewable energy sources. S ...

In the framework of the new feed-in-tariff system in Switzerland for Small Hydropower Plants (SHP), the aim of the SmallFLEX project, led by HES-SO Valais and performed in collaboration with EPFL, WSL, EAWAG, PVE, and FMV, is to show how SHP can provide wi ...

This paper presents preliminary results of an experimental study on the occurrence and development of the upper part-load instability in a reduced-scale Francis turbine. The study includes draft tube pressure measurements, high-speed flow visualization, an ...

At part load conditions, Francis turbines are subject to the emergence of a hydrodynamic instability in their draft tube, referred to as precessing vortex rope. It induces pressure pulsations in the water passages at the precession frequency of the vortex, ...

Hydroelectric units can be operated in synchronous condenser mode to provide reactive power to the electrical power system (EPS) for voltage regulation. In this operating mode, the hydraulic turbine consumes active power and in case of hydroelectric units ...

Francis turbines operating at off-design conditions experience the development of unfavourable cavitation flows in the draft tube at the runner outlet, which induce pressure pulsations and hydro-acoustic resonances in the worst cases. The assessment of hyd ...

Hydropower plant units operating in off-design conditions are subject to cavitation flow instabilities, potentially inducing hydro-acoustic resonances under certain conditions. They can be predicted by using one-dimensional numerical models of hydropower p ...

Francis turbines operating at part load conditions develop a cavitation precessing vortex known as a vortex rope in the draft tube cone below the runner outlet. At part load conditions, this vortex precession acts as an excitation source inducing pressure ...

The massive penetration of the electrical network by renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, pushes the operators to extend hydropower plant units operating range to meet the transmission system operator requirements. However, in off-design opera ...

To reduce CO2 emissions and tackle global warming, an increasing amount of electrical power consumed around the world must be obtained from renewable sources. Among these sources, hydropower has not only the advantage of leaving a very small carbon footpri ...

Hydraulic turbines and pump-turbines are often required to operate in particular conditions at which they consume active power. To keep the power consumption at a minimum, it is necessary to dewater the runner to reduce the mechanical torque. One of these ...

Francis turbines operating at part load conditions typically experience a cavitation vortex rope immediately at the runner outlet. As the compliance of this cavitation flow is much higher than the one in cavitation-free conditions, a decrease in the value ...

Pressurised water supply systems are infrastructures that offer a potential for energy recovery in locations where these systems operate with an excessive pressure. The integration of micro hydropower plants for energy recovery is a challenge, as these sys ...

The rotating air-water ring, featuring a bubbly flow, in the vaneless gap of a reduced scale physical model of a pump-turbine operating in dewatered condition is investigated. High speed visualizations are performed together with pressure fluctuation measu ...

Laser based flow survey methods such as Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV) or Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) have long been used for studying the flow in hydraulic machines. Even if the results have crucially improved our understanding of potentially destab ...

The prediction of pressure and output power fluctuations amplitudes on Francis turbine prototype is a challenge for hydro-equipment industry since it is subjected to guarantees to ensure smooth and reliable operation of the hydro units. The European FP7 re ...

Francis turbines are subject to various types of cavitation flow depending on the operating condition. To enable a smooth integration of the renewable energy sources, hydraulic machines are now increasingly required to extend their operating range, especia ...

The massive penetration of the existing electrical grid by renewable energy sources requires a continuous extension of the operating range of hydroelectric powerplants, which can lead to cavitation flow instabilities inducing undesirable mechanical vibrati ...

Francis turbines operating at part load conditions experience the development of a high swirling flow at the runner outlet, giving rise to the development of a cavitation precessing vortex rope in the draft tube. The latter acts as an excitation source for ...
