Analytical workloads are evolving as the number of users surges and applications that submit queries in batches become popular. However, traditional analytical databases that optimize-then-execute each query individually struggle to provide timely response ...

As modern data pipelines continue to collect, produce, and store a variety of data formats, extracting and combining value from traditional and context-rich sources such as strings, text, video, audio, and logs becomes a manual process where such formats a ...

As the field of ethology advances, especially over the past two decades, the role of animal-robot interaction tools has increasingly become essential. This importance arises from the need for controlled, repetitive, repeatable, and long-duration experiment ...

While phi-divergences have been extensively studied in convex analysis, their use in optimization problems often remains challenging. In this regard, one of the main shortcomings of existing methods is that the minimization of phi-divergences is usually pe ...

Cloud computing has been experiencing sharp development over the last years, leading to an increased demand for application migration to the cloud. Cloud providers, in an effort to attract more customers and earn their confidence, offer to tenants the illu ...

Index join performance is determined by the efficiency of the lookup operation on the involved index. Although database indexes are highly optimized to leverage processor caches, main memory accesses inevitably increase lookup runtime when the index outsiz ...

With the advent of emerging technologies and the Internet of Things, the importance of online data analytics has become more pronounced. Businesses and companies are adopting approaches that provide responsive analytics to stay competitive in the global ma ...

Modern data analytical workloads often need to run queries over a large number of tables. An optimal query plan for such queries is crucial for being able to run these queries within acceptable time bounds. However, with queries involving many tables, find ...

Many data-intensive applications require real-time analytics over streaming data. In a growing number of domains -- sensor network monitoring, social web applications, clickstream analysis, high-frequency algorithmic trading, and fraud detections to name a ...

As the data volume grows, reducing the query execution times remains an elusive goal. While approximate query processing (AQP) techniques present a principled method to trade off accuracy for faster queries in analytics, the sample creation is often consid ...

The goal of query optimization is to map a declarative query (describing data to generate) to a query plan (describing how to generate the data) with optimal execution cost. Query optimization is required to support declarative query interfaces. It is a co ...

Data processing systems offer an ever increasing degree of parallelism on the levels of cores, CPUs, and processing nodes. Query optimization must exploit high degrees of parallelism in order not to gradually become the bottleneck of query evaluation. We s ...

Squall is a scalable online query engine that runs complex analytics in a cluster using skew-resilient, adaptive operators. Online processing implies that results are incrementally built as the input arrives, and it is ubiquitous for many applications such ...

Many analytics applications generate mixed workloads, i.e., workloads comprised of analytical tasks with different processing characteristics including data pre-processing, SQL, and iterative machine learning algorithms. Examples of such mixed workloads ca ...

Grading student SQL queries manually is a tedious and error-prone process. Earlier work on testing correctness of student SQL queries, such as the XData system, can be used to test the correctness of a student query. However, in case a student query is fou ...

We present the design and implementation of a SQL query processor that outperforms existing database systems and is written in just about 500 lines of Scala code - a convincing case study that high-level functional programming can handily beat C for system ...

The growing demand for data-intensive decision support and the migration to multi-tenant infrastructures put databases under the stress of high analytical query load. The requirement for high throughput contradicts the traditional design of query-at-a-time ...

Query plans offer diverse tradeoffs between conflicting cost metrics such as execution time, energy consumption, or execution fees in a multi-objective scenario. It is convenient for users to choose the desired cost tradeoff in an interactive process, dyna ...

The goal of multi-objective query optimization (MOQO) is to find query plans that realize a good compromise between conicting objectives such as minimizing execution time and minimizing monetary fees in a Cloud scenario. A previously proposed exhaustive MO ...
