Is it possible to design a packet-sampling algorithm that prevents the network node that performs the sampling from treating the sampled packets preferentially? We study this problem in the context of designing a "network transparency" system. In this syst ...

Over the last few years, residential and enterprise networking have faced several challenges due to the increasing demand of users for high-throughput connectivity. As a result, efforts are being made to improve coverage, throughput, and robustness. Severa ...

We compute bounds on end-to-end worst-case latency and on nodal backlog size for a per-class deterministic network that implements Credit Based Shaper (CBS) and Asynchronous Traffic Shaping (ATS), as proposed by the Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) standard ...

We generate a biphoton frequency comb from an integrated 40.4 GHz silicon nitride microring and probe the phase coherence through electro-optic mixing of the frequency bins followed by time-resolved detection of the time-correlation function. (c) 2021 The ...

In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the ability to classify and reconstruct subwavelength acoustic images from far field measurements using a machine learning approach, combined with a locally resonant metamaterial lens placed in ...

This paper introduces two courses making use of performing arts at university level. The first course, taught by Prof. Simon Henein and his colleagues, called Improgineering, aims to teach collective creation through improvisation to master’s degree studen ...

The present invention concerns a method for a communication device to transmit a data packet in a wireless communication system. The method comprises: determining (21) a first set of transmission parameters comprising a first central transmission frequency ...

Due to the presence of buffers in the inner network nodes, each congestion event leads to buffer queueing and thus to an increasing end-to-end delay. In the case of delay sensitive applications, a large delay might not be acceptable and a solution to prope ...

Producing hydrogen from water using a redox mediator on solid electrocatalyst particles in a reactor offers several advantages over classical electrolysis in terms of safety, membrane degradation, purity and flexibility. Herein, vanadium-mediated hydrogen ...

Basket weaving is a traditional craft for creating curved surfaces as an interwoven array of thin, flexible, and initially straight ribbons. The three-dimensional shape of a woven structure emerges through a complex interplay of the elastic bending behavio ...

Deficit Round-Robin (DRR) is a widespread scheduling algorithm that provides fair queueing with variable-length packets. Bounds on worst-case delays obtained with DRR were found by Boyer et al. They used a rigorous network calculus approach and characteriz ...

This paper presents exact capacity characterizations for the case, when a principal, Alice, wants to securely send a message to another principal, Bob, over three network configurations: the parallel edges network, the V-network, and the triangle network. ...

To provide low latency and high throughput guarantees, most large key-value stores keep the data in the memory of many servers. Despite the natural parallelism across lookups, the load imbalance, introduced by heavy skew in the popularity distribution of k ...

String sorting is an important part of database and MapReduce applications; however, it has not been studied as extensively as sorting of fixed-length keys. Handling variable-length keys in hardware is challenging and it is no surprise that no string sorte ...

In this paper, we present an efficient, functional, and formally verified parsing algorithm for LL(1) context-free expressions based on the concept of derivatives of formal languages. Parsing with derivatives is an elegant parsing technique, which, in the ...

The conventional wisdom is that aggressive networking requirements, such as high packet rates for small messages and μs-scale tail latency, are best addressed outside the kernel, in a user-level networking stack. We present ix, a dataplane operating system ...

Reliable packet delivery within stringent delay-constraints is of paramount importance to mission-critical computer applications with hard real-time constraints. Because retransmission and coding techniques counteract the delay requirements, reliability ma ...

This Work-in-Progress research paper describes preliminary work on a research agenda for emotions in engineering education. Emotions play an important role for teaching and learning in engineering education, but research on the topic is scarce. To spur res ...

The emergence of OpenFlow-capable switches enables exciting new network functionality, at the risk of programming errors that make communication less reliable. The centralized programming model, where a single controller program manages the network, seems ...

Combining diffusion strategies with complementary properties enables enhanced performance when they can be run simultaneously. In this article, we first propose two schemes for the convex combination of two diffusion strategies, namely, the power-normalize ...
