Precipitation of (bi)carbonate salts during the electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2RR) has been identified as a major cause of degradation and one of the main challenges to be overcome before implementing this technology on the industrial scale. Recently, t ...

Otoliths are calcium carbonate components of the stato-acoustical organ responsible for hearing and maintenance of the body balance in teleost fish. During their formation, control over, e.g., morphology and carbonate polymorph is influenced by complex ins ...

The use of supplementary cementitious materials as a partial replacement for Portland cement is the most effective way to reduce the carbon footprint of the concrete industry. Raw clays containing kaolinite (kaolin) are promising substitute materials. In t ...

Calcium carbonate is a model system to investigate the mechanism of solid formation by precipitation from solutions, and it is often considered in the debated classical and nonclassical nucleation mechanism. Despite the great scientific relevance of calciu ...

Mesostructured silver catalysts have shown a substantial rise in reaction selectivity for the conversion of CO2 into fuels with increasing thickness of ordered, inverse-opal films. The challenge lies in the optimization of the morphology to maximize the CO ...

Limestone calcined-clay cements (LC3) take advantage of the synergetic effects of calcium carbonate reaction with the additional aluminium provided by the calcined clay. As temperature decreases, calcium carbonate solubility increase, therefore, the early- ...

Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is one of the most abundant biominerals that is prevalent in rocks and often used as a structural material in marine animals. Many of these natural CaCO3-based materials display excellent mechanical properties that are difficult t ...

The Tiermas low temperature geothermal system, hosted in the Paleocene-Eocene carbonates of the Jaca-Pamplona basin, has been studied to evaluate the geochemistry and the temperature of the waters in the deep reservoir. These waters are of chloride-sodium ...

The study presents a comprehensive characterization of the fabric of bio-improved soils by introducing an image based quantitative analysis of the crystalline bond lattice, as a means of better understanding and interpreting the observed mechanical respons ...

The reactivity of disordered, noncrystalline U(IV) species remains poorly characterized despite their prevalence in biostimulated sediments. Because of the lack of crystalline structure, noncrystalline U(IV) may be susceptible to oxidative mobilization und ...

Background Mouse transgenesis has provided the unique opportunity to investigate mechanisms underlying sodium kidney reabsorption as well as end organ damage. However, understanding mouse background and the experimental conditions effects on phenotypic rea ...

Scleractinian corals begin their biomineralization process shortly after larval settlement with the formation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) structures at the interface between the larval tissues and the substrate. The newly settled larvae exert variable deg ...

We present a new method for analyzing ion, or molecule, distributions around helical nucleic acids and illustrate the approach by analyzing data derived from molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis is based on the use of curvilinear helicoidal coordin ...

A BaCO3 slurry, containing radioactive C-14, is produced during the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel. This slurry is encapsulated in a Portland-blastfurnace slag composite cement. The effect of BaCO3 on the hydration of OPC and Portland-blastfurnace slag ...

Adsorption of N-2 at 77 K and scanning electron microscopy have been used to measure the changes in the support morphology, at nano- and microscale level, along the processes involved in the preparation of a supported Pd catalyst: Pd deposition, doping, an ...

This manuscript describes the synthesis of poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) brushes via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of sodium methacrylate (NaMA) and their use as substrates for the mineralization of calcium carbonate. A C ...

This thesis is a contribution to the field of cellular communication in arteries during vasomotion, i.e. rhythmic and spontaneous diameter oscillations of arteries. Investigating how individual smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and endothelial cells (ECs) calcium ...

Strontium lanthanum manganite (LSM) and lanthanum ferrite (LSF) perovskite cathode and oxygen membrane materials were synthesized using different techniques: spray pyrolysis, a modified citrate route, oxalate and carbonate co-precipitations. The use of Ca, ...
