The minimum amount of shear reinforcement to be provided in reinforced concrete members has been a topic of debate and research for decades without reaching a consensus. Defining such values is however instrumental to build in an economic manner and to saf ...

Although robustness is an important consideration to guarantee the performance of designs under deviation, systems are often engineered by evaluating their performance exclusively at nominal conditions. Robustness is sometimes evaluated a posteriori throug ...

Optical imaging surveys measure both the galaxy density and the gravitational lensing-induced shear fields across the sky. Recently, the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Collaboration used a joint fit to two-point correlations between these observables to place ti ...

Soft tissue reconstruction currently relies on two main approaches, one involving the implantation of ex-ternal biomaterials and the second one exploiting surgical autologous tissue displacement. While both methods have different advantages and disadvantag ...

In agriculture, a rising number of sustainability assessments are available that also comprise financial ratios. In a literature review of farm management textbooks, taking account of the differences between European and North American practices and consid ...

Mobility impairments are a common symptom of age-related degenerative diseases. Gait features can discriminate those with mobility disorders from healthy individuals, yet phenotyping specific pathologies remains challenging. This study aims to identify if ...

We use the IllustrisTNG100 hydrodynamical simulation to study the dependence of the galaxy two-point correlation function on a broad range of secondary subhalo and galactic properties. We construct galaxy mock catalogues adopting a standard subhalo abundan ...

Machine-learning of atomic-scale properties amounts to extracting correlations between structure, composition and the quantity that one wants to predict. Representing the input structure in a way that best reflects such correlations makes it possible to im ...

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is thought to reflect disrupted development of brain connectivity characterized by white matter abnormalities and dyscoordination of activity across brain regions that give rise to core features. But there is little consensus ...

Highly accurate numerical or physical experiments are often very time-consuming or expensive to obtain. When time or budget restrictions prohibit the generation of additional data, the amount of available samples may be too limited to provide satisfactory ...

The beam emission spectroscopy (BES) diagnostic is used to measure fluctuations of electron density in the edge and core of fusion plasmas, and is a key in understanding turbulence in a plasma reactor. A synthetic BES diagnostic for the turbulence simulati ...

When an optical field is reflected from a compliant mirror, its intensity and phase become quantum-correlated due to radiation pressure. These correlations form a valuable resource: the mirror may be viewed as an effective Kerr medium generating squeezed s ...

In global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers, the first signal processing stage is the acquisition, which consists in detecting the received GNSS signals and determining the associated code delay and Doppler frequency by means of correlations wit ...

In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the ability to classify and reconstruct subwavelength acoustic images from far field measurements using a machine learning approach, combined with a locally resonant metamaterial lens placed in ...

Since the discovery of simple power attacks, the cryptographic research community has developed significantly more advanced attack methods. The idea behind most algorithms remains to perform a statistical analysis by correlating the power trace obtained wh ...

This paper introduces two courses making use of performing arts at university level. The first course, taught by Prof. Simon Henein and his colleagues, called Improgineering, aims to teach collective creation through improvisation to master’s degree studen ...

The time-reversal properties of charged systems in a constant external magnetic field are reconsidered in this paper. We show that the evolution equations of the system are invariant under a new symmetry operation that implies a new signature property for ...

Network representations of complex systems are limited to pairwise interactions, but real-world systems often involve higher-order interactions. This Perspective looks at the new physics emerging from attempts to characterize these interactions. ...

The zero,-field splitting (ZFS) parameters of the Mn(EDTA)(H2O).2H(2)O. and [Mn(MeNO(2)A)(H2O)].2H(2)O systems were estimated by using DFT and ab initio CASSCF/NEVPT2 calculations (EDTA = (ethane-1,2-41bis(azanetriy1))tetraatetate; MeNO2A = 2,2'-(7-m ...

Producing hydrogen from water using a redox mediator on solid electrocatalyst particles in a reactor offers several advantages over classical electrolysis in terms of safety, membrane degradation, purity and flexibility. Herein, vanadium-mediated hydrogen ...
