The role of light elements in ceramic materials cannot be overestimated. By tuning their concentration, a whole multitude of mechanisms can be activated, directly influencing the material's functional properties. However, accurate determination of light el ...

This paper attempts to situate concrete recycling within the contemporary economically convenient waste streams. In the case of concrete, the economically convenient waste stream is to demolish it into rubble and take it to landfill or grind it into aggreg ...

In fracture mechanics, polyacrylamide hydrogel has been widely used as a model material in experiments due to its optical transparency, the brittle nature of its failure, and low Rayleigh wave velocity. Indeed, linear elastic fracture mechanics has been us ...

In this paper, we introduce a novel automated and high-precision acoustic emission (AE) monitoring algorithm and the software SIMORGH, which is suitable for structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil structures. Initially developed for laboratory-scale hy ...

We investigate the geometrically nonlinear deformation and buckling of a slender elastic beam subject to time-dependent ‘fictitious’ (non-inertial) forces arising from unsteady rotation. Using a rotary apparatus that accurately imposes an angular accelerat ...

This paper investigates the so-far unexplored influence of the probes on the state of polarization (SOP) of the pump pulse in a distributed fiber sensor based on dual-probe Brillouin optical-time domain analysis (BOTDA). A theoretical framework, based on a ...

This study investigates experimentally hydraulic fracture propagation, arrest and closure in permeable rocks.Through a controlled laboratory experiment on a Molasse sandstone block under a true triaxial state of stress, hydraulic fracture propagation and c ...

In the present study, the effect of two distinct heat treatment conditions on microstructure, mechanical, and shape memory properties of Fe-17Mn-5Si-10Cr-4Ni-(V, C) (wt%) Fe-based shape memory alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) was investi ...

This study aimed to identify the fatigue crack initiation site of high-frequency mechanical impact (HFMI)-treated high-strength steel welded joints subjected to high peak stresses; the impact of HFMI treatment residual stress relaxation being of particular ...

Applications of photovoltaic (PV) cells in buildings are often excluded from locations with major mechanical strains because of their brittleness and possible damages at small mechanical strains. Combinations of glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) compon ...

Textile electronics embedded in clothing represent an exciting new frontier for modern healthcare and communication systems. Fundamental to the development of these textile electronics is the development of the fibers forming the cloths into electronic dev ...

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), particularly urinary incontinence (UI), represent a significant global health challenge, affecting millions of patients worldwide. The artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) remains one of the most effective intervention fo ...
