The development of manganese (Mn)-rich cathodes for Li-ion batteries promises to alleviate potential supply chain bottlenecks in battery manufacturing. Fundamental challenges in Mn-rich cathodes arise from phenomena such as structural changes due to cooper ...

Diffusion is one of the most fundamental concepts in materials science, playing a pivotal role in materials synthesis, forming, and degradation. Of particular importance is solid state interdiffusion of metals which defines the usable parameter space for m ...

Cupredoxins are widely occurring copper-binding proteins with a typical Greek-key beta barrel fold. They are generally described as electron carriers that rely on a T1 copper centre coordinated by four ligands provided by the folded polypeptide. The discov ...

To characterize in detail the charge density wave (CDW) transition of 1T-VSe2, its electronic structure and lattice dynamics are comprehensively studied by means of x-ray diffraction, muon spectroscopy, angle resolved photoemission (ARPES), diffuse and ine ...

We have performed electrochemical treatment of the van der Waals antiferromagnetic materials FePS3 and NiPS3 with the ionic liquid EMIM-BF4, achieving significant molecular intercalation. Mass analysis of the intercalated compounds, EMIMx-FePS3 and EMIMx-N ...

We study elastic ribbons subject to large, tensile pre-stress confined to a central region within the cross-section. These ribbons can buckle spontaneously to form helical shapes, featuring regions of alternating chirality (phases) that are separated by so ...

For decades transition-metal oxides have generated a huge interest due to the multitude of physical phenomena they exhibit. In this class of materials, the rare-earth nickelates, RNiO3, stand out for their rich phase diagram stemming from complex couplings ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

The nature of the gap observed at the zone border in the spin excitation spectrum of CrI3 quasitwo-dimensional single crystals is still controversial. We perform first-principles calculations based on time-dependent density functional perturbation theory, ...

The Jahn-Teller (JT) effect involves the ions M with a degenerate electronic state distorting the corner-sharing MO6 octahedra to lift the degeneracy, inducing strong coupling of electrons to lattice, and mediating the exotic properties in perovskite oxide ...

The electronic density of states (DOS) quantifies the distribution of the energy levels that can be occupied by electrons in a quasiparticle picture and is central to modern electronic structure theory. It also underpins the computation and interpretation ...

Transition metal oxides represent a class of materials displaying very unusual electronic, structural and magnetic properties. They are extremely interesting, both from a technological and fundamental point of view. The most important characteristic of the ...

The cascade of electronic phases in CsV3Sb5 raises the prospect to disentangle their mutual interactions in a clean, strongly interacting kagome lattice. When the kagome planes are stacked into a crystal, its electronic dimensionality encodes how much of t ...

Thermally stimulated current (TSC) is a widely used technique to assess trap states and extract their density, energy, and capture rate using analytical expressions. In many cases, the latter are derived from physical models pertaining to inorganic semicon ...

Two different heat-transport mechanisms are discussed in solids. In crystals, heat carriers propagate and scatter particlelike as described by Peierls's formulation of the Boltzmann transport equation for phonon wave packets. In glasses, instead, carriers ...

Two-dimensional dopant layers (δ-layers) in semiconductors provide the high-mobility electron liquids (2DELs) needed for nanoscale quantum-electronic devices. Key parameters such as carrier densities, effective masses, and confinement thicknesses for 2DELs ...

The discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelate thin films has brought increased attention to the behavior of the doped perovskite phase. Despite this interest, the majority of existing studies pertain to hole-doped perovskite rare-ear ...

We study the water dehydrogenation reaction at the BiVO4(010)-water interface by combining nudged-elastic-band calculations and electronic structure calculations at the hybrid functional level. We investigate the pathway and the kinetic barrier for the adi ...

There is a never-ending push for electronic systems to provide faster operation speeds, higher energy efficiencies, and higher power capabilities at smaller scales. These requirements are apparent in different areas of electronics, from radiofrequency (RF) ...

We present first-principles calculations of the dynamic susceptibility in strained and doped ferromagnetic MnBi using time-dependent density functional theory. In spite of being a metal, MnBi exhibits signatures of strong correlation and a proper descripti ...
