The development of manganese (Mn)-rich cathodes for Li-ion batteries promises to alleviate potential supply chain bottlenecks in battery manufacturing. Fundamental challenges in Mn-rich cathodes arise from phenomena such as structural changes due to cooper ...

Cupredoxins are widely occurring copper-binding proteins with a typical Greek-key beta barrel fold. They are generally described as electron carriers that rely on a T1 copper centre coordinated by four ligands provided by the folded polypeptide. The discov ...

Why are materials with specific characteristics more abundant than others? This is a fundamental question in materials science and one that is traditionally difficult to tackle, given the vastness of compositional and configurational space. We highlight he ...

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin ...

Near-infrared luminescent materials have recently received considerable attention for a large number of applications, including in solid-state lighting, as bioimaging agents, as photovoltaic cells, and in the telecommunication industry. By adding diverse e ...

The Cu-3d states in the high-T-c cuprates are often described as a single band of 3d(x2-y2) states, with the other four 3d states having about 2 to 3 eV higher energy due to the lower-than-octahedral crystal field at the copper sites. However, excitations ...

For decades transition-metal oxides have generated a huge interest due to the multitude of physical phenomena they exhibit. In this class of materials, the rare-earth nickelates, RNiO3, stand out for their rich phase diagram stemming from complex couplings ...

One of the main goals of organometallic chemistry in the last decades was the activation of small molecule in mild reaction conditions. Even though multiple examples of catalytic cycles able to produce fine chemicals from cheap and abundant sources using t ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

Solving native structures of such large molecules, like biomolecules, is often challenging, particularly due to the potentially infinite number of non-covalent interactions with water. In this thesis, we report the use of cold ion gas-phase action spectros ...

Ynolates or ketenyl anions, [RCCO]-, are negatively charged reactive intermediates, which can be generated in situ and used for divergent chemical transformations. Ynolates can react either at the oxygen or carbon centres or across the C-C triple bond, mak ...

The thermal behavior of 3-benzoylpropionic acid (BPA) was investigated using single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-diffraction, as well as differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The study revealed the existence of two subtly distinct structures of B ...

In the third study, the order-disorder phase transition of single-crystal C60 is studied using time-resolved electron microscopy. Solid C60 undergoes a first-order phase transition upon heating to 260 K. This is a structural transition from the low-tempera ...

The magnetic propertiesof transition-metal ions aregenerallydescribed by the atomic spins of the ions and their exchange coupling. The orbital moment, usually largely quenched due the ligand field,is then seen as a perturbation. In such a scheme, S = 1/2 io ...

Dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) of solids doped with high-spin metal ions, such as Gd3+, is a useful strategy to enhance the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensitivity for these samples. Spin diffusion can relay polarisation throughout a sample, which ...

Many properties of materials, including their dissolution kinetics, hardness, and optical appearance, depend on their structure. Unfortunately, it is often difficult to control the structure of low molecular weight organic compounds that have a high propen ...

Due to the subtle balance of intermolecular interactions that govern structure-property relations, predicting the stability of crystal structures formed from molecular building blocks is a highly non-trivial scientific problem. A particularly active and fr ...

Structure determinationof molecular solids through NMR crystallographyrelies on the generation of a comprehensive set of candidate crystalstructures and on the comparison of chemical shifts computed for thosecandidates with experimental values. Exploring t ...

The microscopic mechanism of heavy band formation, relevant for unconventional superconductivity in CeCoIn5 and other Ce-based heavy fermion materials, depends strongly on the efficiency with which f electrons are delocalized from the rare earth sites and ...

Barocaloric (BC) materials provide cheaper and more energy efficient alternatives to traditional refrigerants. Some liquid alkanes were recently shown to exhibit a colossal BC effect, matching the entropy changes in commercial vapour-liquid refrigerants. D ...
