Optical amplification, crucial for modern communication, primarily relies on erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs)1,2. Yet, EDFAs only cover a portion of the low-loss spectrum of optical fibres. This has motivated the development of amplifiers operating be ...

Periodic structures in optics, like gratings or photonic crystals have played a pivotal role in both basic and applied research applications over the decades [1]. As far as, integrated photonics is concerned, another highly relevant optical structure, that ...

Synthetically grown high-quality single crystal diamond is an excellent base material for quantum photonics. Planar single crystal diamond substrates several square millimeters in size are nowadays commercially available. They can be precisely structured u ...

Floquet topological physics, an area exploring periodically driven systems and leveraging degrees of freedom in the temporal dimension, has opened new avenues in photonics by enabling the creation of novel topological phases, new control mechanisms, and in ...

The application of machine learning in medicine and healthcare has led to the creation of numerous diagnostic and prognostic models. However, despite their success, current approaches generally issue predictions using data from a single modality. This stan ...

Deep neural networks often fail to generalize when deployed in dynamic and unpredictable real-world environments, where data distributions at test time can differ significantly from those encountered during training. Since simulating all possible distribut ...

As medical datasets rapidly expand, creating detailed annotations of different body structures becomes increasingly expensive and time-consuming. We consider that requesting radiologists to create detailed annotations is unnecessarily burdensome and that p ...

Rapid urbanization, alongside escalating resource depletion and ecological degradation, underscores the critical need for innovative urban development solutions. In response, sustainable smart cities are increasingly turning to cutting-edge technologies—su ...

Formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) is known as a fast and robust method of functionalization of material surfaces. Of particular interest are LIPSS that manifest as periodic modulation of phase state of the material, as it impli ...

The hybrid integration of III-V gain media with low-loss photonic integrated circuits has advanced the performance of laser systems in terms of laser stability and coherence. The advent of lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) photonics for self-injection lo ...

The short de Broglie wavelength and strong interaction empower free electrons to probe structures and excitations in materials and biomolecules. Recently, electron-photon interactions have enabled new optical manipulation schemes for electron beams. In thi ...

The selective and controlled formation of nanocrystals in glass is emerging as a versatile method to achieve functional photonics, optoelectronics, and quantum devices, such as single-photon emitters. Here, we investigate the use of wide-field polarimetric ...

Sharpness-aware minimization (SAM) has been shown to improve the generalization of neural networks. However, each SAM update requires sequentially computing two gradients, effectively doubling the per-iteration cost compared to base optimizers like SGD. We ...

The resistive contribution of the vacuum chamber represents a significant source of the collective effects and should be analysed in several aspects. Due to the NEG-coated redesigned ILSF vacuum chamber, the resistive-wall effects were carefully studied. T ...

The advent of the "generative age"marks a pivotal moment in AI evolution, with models like OpenAI's GPT-4 and DALL-E transforming content creation across various fields. These advancements bring unprecedented efficiency and new applications but also presen ...

Texture modeling and synthesis are essential for enhancing the realism of virtual environments. Methods that directly synthesize textures in 3D offer distinct advantages to the UV-mapping-based methods as they can create seamless textures and align more cl ...
