This paper describes the development of a novel medical x-ray imaging system adapted to the needs and constraints of low- and middle-income countries. The developed system is based on an indirect conversion chain: a scintillator plate produces visible ligh ...

Sharing pictures has become a very popular practice among consumers. Most recent cameras, displays, and smartphones can capture and display images in high dynamic range and wide colour gamut, contributing to an increase of this type of content. It is a wel ...

In my thesis, I reveal several already-existing and emerging challenges in multi-objective management of multiprocessor systems, and address them through novel solutions, from heuristics to RL, depending on the complexity of the problem. Conventional multi ...

Nowadays, image and video are the data types that consume most of the resources of modern communication channels, both in fixed and wireless networks. Thus, it is vital to compress visual data as much as possible, while maintaining some target quality leve ...

The rapid development of digital imaging and video has placed visual contents in the heart of our lives. Digital multimedia span a vast number of areas from business to leisure, including but not limited to education, medicine, accessibility, training, adv ...

Visual distortions in processed 360-degree visual content and consumed through head-mounted displays (HMDs) are perceived very differently when compared to traditional 2D content. To better understand how compression-related artifacts affect the overall pe ...

Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) XS is a new International Standard from the JPEG Committee (formally known as ISO/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) JTC1/SC29/WG1). It defines an interoperable, visually lossless low-latency lightweight ...

We generate a biphoton frequency comb from an integrated 40.4 GHz silicon nitride microring and probe the phase coherence through electro-optic mixing of the frequency bins followed by time-resolved detection of the time-correlation function. (c) 2021 The ...

In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the ability to classify and reconstruct subwavelength acoustic images from far field measurements using a machine learning approach, combined with a locally resonant metamaterial lens placed in ...

This paper presents a quality evaluation study of point cloud codecs that have been recently standardised by the MPEG committee. In particular, a subjective experiment to assess their performance in terms of bitrate against visual quality is designed and r ...

The cameras are invented by imitating the human visual system to capture the scene. The camera technologies have been substantially advanced in recent years. 108 MP resolution with 100x hybrid zoom has become standard features for smartphone flagships. In ...

This paper introduces two courses making use of performing arts at university level. The first course, taught by Prof. Simon Henein and his colleagues, called Improgineering, aims to teach collective creation through improvisation to master’s degree studen ...

Lossy image compression is a popular, simple and effective solution to reduce the amount of data representing digital pictures. In most lossy compression methods, the reduced volume of data in bits is achieved at the expense of introducing visual artifacts ...

Since its invention in the 19th century, photography has allowed to create durable images of the world around us by capturing the intensity of light that flows through a scene, first analogically by using light-sensitive material, and then, with the advent ...

The rapid increase in medical and biomedical image acquisition rates has opened up new avenues for image analysis, but has also introduced formidable challenges. This is evident, for example, in selective plane illumination microscopy where acquisition rat ...
