We report a new approach to controllable thermal stimulation of a single living cell and its compartments. The technique is based on the use of a single polycrystalline diamond particle containing silicon-vacancy (SiV) color centers. Due to the presence of ...

Soft tissue reconstruction currently relies on two main approaches, one involving the implantation of ex-ternal biomaterials and the second one exploiting surgical autologous tissue displacement. While both methods have different advantages and disadvantag ...

Bottom-up models of functionally relevant patterns of neural activity provide an explicit link between neuronal dynamics and computation. A prime example of functional activity patterns are propagating bursts of place-cell activities called hippocampal rep ...

We offer the first security analysis of cache compression, a promising architectural technique that is likely to appear in future mainstream processors. We find that cache compression has novel security implications because the compressibility of a cache l ...

The connectivity of a neuronal network has a major effect on its functionality and role. It is generally believed that the complex network structure of the brain provides a physiological basis for information processing. Therefore, identifying the network’ ...

Tissue organization is often characterized by specific patterns of cell morphology. How such patterns emerge in developing tissues is a fundamental open question. Here, we investigate the emergence of tissue-scale patterns of cell shape and mechanical tiss ...

The correlation electron cyclotron emission diagnostic of tokamak a configuration variable has recently been upgraded. It now has the choice of three lines of sight: two horizontal lines placed on the low field side of the vessel, perpendicular to the magn ...

Implantable neural interfaces are an emerging concept which is revolutionizing various domains of medicine and rehabilitation. However, the long-term efficiency and reliability of these devices is often limited, mainly attributed to the fundamental differe ...

Vertebrate genomes are partitioned into contact domains defined by enhanced internal contact frequency and formed by two principal mechanisms: compartmentalization of transcriptionally active and inactive domains, and stalling of chromosomal loop-extruding ...

Deformation in nanocrystalline (NC) materials is strongly influenced by the presence of a large fraction of grain boundaries. We present a comparative study on the role of intragranular root-mean-square strain and crystal-lographic texture on recovery proc ...

Lineage tracing is a basic concept in developmental biology, as well as diseases related to organ development. A reliable method to track cell lineages in human tissues has the potential to greatly contribute to the fields of oncogenesis, tissue renewal, a ...

T cell-based cancer immunotherapy has achieved great success in the clinic; however, only a small fraction of patients respond to this therapy. Strategies to specifically and safely augment anticancer activity through controlled delivery of T cell supporti ...

There is currently a push towards big data and data mining in materials research to accelerate discovery. Zeolites, metal-organic frameworks and other related crystalline porous materials are not immune to this phenomenon, as evidenced by the proliferation ...

We derive rigorous asymptotic results for the magnitude of contagion in a large counterparty network and give an analytical expression for the asymptotic fraction of defaults, in terms of network characteristics. Our results extend previous studies on cont ...

Amongst the substances found in any living organism one of the most central in the workings of each living cell is deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). For that reason it has been the subject of research in many of its aspects. These range from DNA sequencing to a ...

Neuroprosthetics are a class of medical devices that aim to restore lost or impaired functions of the nervous system by electrical stimulation or recording of neural tissue. State of the art neural implants suffer today from a mechanical mismatch compared ...

The design of stimuli-responsive nanocarriers has raised much attention to achieve higher local concentration of therapeutics and mitigate the appearance of drug resistance. The combination of imaging properties and controlled photorelease of active molecu ...

The dynamics of Na atoms on the surface of helium nanodroplets following excitation via the 3p

We search for the decay B-s(0) -> gamma gamma and measure the branching fraction for B-s(0) -> phi gamma using 121.4 fb(-1) of data collected at the Upsilon(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric- energy e(+)e(-) collider. The B-s(0) ...

In this paper, we revisit an efficient algorithm for noisy group testing in which each item is decoded separately (Malyutov and Mateev, 1980), and develop novel performance guarantees via an information-theoretic framework for general noise models. For the ...
