Ongoing cryospheric change has modified sediment export from glacierized catchments substantially, with significant implications for ecosystems and downstream users, notably hydropower companies. Sediment is exported either as finer sediment in suspension ...

We present a simple, vertically-explicit 2D model of river bank erosion that also takes the effect of sediment stabilization by plant roots into account. The model is solved in quasi-analytical form for an exemplary non-stationary hydrograph temporal signa ...

The surface erosion of biased electrodes immersed in a radio frequency (RF) plasma was investigated in oblique magnetic fields ranging from 0.1 T to 3.5 T. The plasma potential and density in the vicinity of the biased electrode have been measured using an ...

Background:Short-term forecasts of infectious disease burden can contribute to situational awareness and aid capacity planning. Based on best practice in other fields and recent insights in infectious disease epidemiology, one can maximise the predictive p ...

Chancy-Pougny is a run-of-river dam on the Swiss–French border constructed in the early 1920s. Since its commissioning, the operation of the four spillway gates has been responsible for a progressive erosion of the stilling basin. The future scour potentia ...

Water quality prediction in the spatially heterogeneous environment is challenging as the importance of water quality parameters (WQPs) and the performance of prediction models may vary across space. Thus, this study proposed spatially adaptive machine lea ...

In the past two decades, wind energy has been under fast development worldwide. The dramatic increase of wind power penetration in electricity production has posed a big challenge to grid integration due to the high uncertainty of wind power. Accurate real ...

Accurately simulating snow-cover dynamics and the snow-atmosphere coupling is of major importance for topics as wide-ranging as water resources, natural hazards and climate change impacts with consequences for sea-level rise. We present a new modelling fra ...

The jackknife method gives an internal covariance estimate for large-scale structure surveys and allows model-independent errors on cosmological parameters. Using the SDSS-III BOSS CMASS sample, we study how the jackknife size and number of resamplings imp ...

Simulation-based optimization models are widely applied to find optimal operating conditions of processes. Often, computational challenges arise from model complexity, making the generation of reliable design solutions difficult. We propose an algorithm fo ...

River bank (RB) erosion is a global issue aecting livelihoods and properties of millions of people. However, it has not received enough attention in the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), i.e., the world’s third largest delta, compared to salinity intrusion an ...

Erosion significantly affects the dynamics of gravity-driven mass flows. In snow avalanches, the snow cover can be substantially eroded but only partially entrained, however, there are very limited investigations to substantiate this difference. Here, we s ...

High-resolution lake and reservoir bathymetric surveys can pinpoint locations that may experience underwater landslides (subaquatic sedimentary mass movements). These can pose a risk to underwater and shoreline infrastructure. This paper outlines an approa ...

Aeolian transport controls landform formations on Earth and other planets and crucially affects the atmospheric system. With elaborate wind tunnel measurements, we find that the aerodynamic entrainment rate follows a yet unreported exponential increase in ...

During Arctic springtime, halogen radicals oxidize atmospheric elemental mercury (Hg0), which deposits to the cryosphere. This is followed by a summertime atmospheric Hg0 peak that is thought to resultmostly fromterrestrial Hg inputs to the ArcticOcean, fo ...

This study describes and evaluates a new downscaling scheme that specifically addresses the need for hillslope-scale atmospheric-forcing time series for modelling the local impact of regional climate change projections on the land surface in complex terrai ...

In most studies of dam's displacement prediction based on monitoring data, emphasis was given on improving the prediction accuracy, while the model stability was merely considered. This study proposed a numerical-statistical combined model which aims to im ...

We present a general framework for portfolio risk management in discrete time, based on a replicating martingale. This martingale is learned from a finite sample in a supervised setting. Our method learns the features necessary for an effective low-dimensi ...

Recently, several theories including the replica method made predictions for the generalization error of Kernel Ridge Regression. In some regimes, they predict that the method has a 'spectral bias': decomposing the true function f* on the eigenbasis of the ...

Spatially distributed meteorological information at the slope scale is relevant for many processes in complex terrain, yet information at this sub-km spatial resolution is difficult to obtain. While downscaling to kilometer resolutions is well described in ...
