Science is facing a reproducibility crisis. Overcoming it would require concerted efforts to replicate prior studies, but the incentives for researchers are currently weak, as replicating prior studies requires considerable time and effort without providin ...

Despite the growing interest in emotions in engineering education, empirical research on incorporating them into engineering ethics education is limited. Therefore, we designed this experimental study to assess how different methods for integrating compass ...

In this chapter, we discuss field experiments in surveys that are conducted with the purpose of learning about expectation formation and the link between expectations and behavior. We begin by reviewing the rationale for conducting experiments within surve ...

The SALUTE project aims at evaluating performance of electroacoustic metasurface, employing a surface array of controlled electroacoustic actuators, for smart acoustic lining under grazing turbulent flow to be used in UHBR Technologies Engines. Theoretical ...

Machine learning is often cited as a new paradigm in control theory, but is also often viewed as empirical and less intuitive for students than classical model-based methods. This is particularly the case for reinforcement learning, an approach that does n ...

In software engineering, the developers' joy of decomposing and recomposing microservice-based applications has led to an enormous wave of microservice artefact technologies. To understand them better, researchers perform hundreds of experiments and empiri ...

This paper presents two sensor systems used in smart agriculture. The first sensor system is capable of remote monitoring at real time the condition of grains stored in silo bags. The second sensor system comprises soil's nitrogen (N), potassium (K), phosp ...

Advances of roller compacted concrete (RCC) in the construction of concrete dams has significantly influenced the development of stepped spillways. The latter are now more frequently implemented in the rocky abutments of embankment dams. The energy dissipa ...

As a basic and effective tool for explanation, prediction and decision making, causal relationships have been utilized in almost all disciplines. Traditionally, causal relationships are identified by making use of interventions or randomized controlled exp ...

Occupants' comfort perception affects building energy consumptions. To improve the understanding of human comfort, which is crucial to reduce energy demand, laboratory experiments with humans in controlled environments (test rooms) are fundamental, but the ...

Recently a joint project has been carried out between the Paul Scherrer Institut, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne and swissnuclear, an industrial partner, in order to determine the axial void distribution in a channel installed in the reflecto ...

A modern day light microscope has evolved from a tool devoted to making primarily empirical observations to what is now a sophisticated , quantitative device that is an integral part of both physical and life science research. Nowadays, microscopes are fou ...

Landslide-generated waves, also called impulse waves, occur as a result of the intrusion of landslides (such as rock falls, debris flows, and avalanches) into bodies of water (such as lakes, reservoirs, and seas). The objective of this thesis was to study ...

We investigate the willingness of individuals to persist at exploration in the face of failure. Prior research suggests that the organization's "tolerance for failure" may motivate greater exploration by the individual. Little is known, however, about how ...

Reproducibility of results is essential for a well-designed and conducted experiment. Several reasons may originate failure in reproducing data, such as selective reporting, low statistical power, or poor analysis. In this study, we used PEG6000 samples fr ...

This experimental study investigates a novel multi-functional one dimensional-two dimensional (1D-2D) heterojunction made of two different band-gap semiconductors, i.e. single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and tungsten di-selenide (WSe2). The proposed ult ...

The blockage of weirs or bridges by in-stream wood can reduce the flood discharge capacity, leading to hazardous situations. To assess the related risk, blocking probabilities quantifications are needed. However, large wood has a random behaviour and it is ...

River reaches downstream of dams with constant residual discharge often lack sediment supply and periodic high flows due to dam sediment retention and flow regulation, respectively. To test a novel multi-deposit methodology for defining environmental flows ...

Experimental methods provide important advantages for advancing academic understanding of entrepreneurship. Yet, the complex and comingled relationships between some of entrepreneurship's key characteristics pose thorny methodological challenges to entrepr ...

This paper reports results of the deployment of a learning analytics dashboard in the context of introductory Maths, Physics and Chemistry courses in the first year of the Engineering bachelor of a Swiss technical university. Informed by research on self r ...
