It is a generally accepted idea that typology is an essential element in the disciplinary dimension of architecture. The concept of typology, in its most common definition, is sufficiently malleable to cover a wide range of uses, but it is also this vaguen ...

Reliable broadcast is a communication primitive guaranteeing, intuitively, that all processes in a distributed system deliver the same set of messages. The reason why this primitive is appealing is twofold: (i) we can implement it deterministically in a co ...

The effect of electron-beam melting (EBM) and selective laser melting (SLM) processes on the chemical composition, phase composition, density, microstructure, and microhardness of as-built Ti55511 blocks were evaluated and compared. The work also aimed to ...

The distribution of spatially aggregated data from a stochastic process may exhibit tail behaviour different from that of its marginal distributions. For a large class of aggregating functionals we introduce the -extremal coefficient, which quantifies this ...

Consider a random process s that is a solution of the stochastic differential equation Ls = w with L a homogeneous operator and w a multidimensional Levy white noise. In this paper, we study the asymptotic effect of zooming in or zooming out of the process ...

By applying a slow curing process, we show that biomolecules can be incorporated via a simple process as liquid stable phases inside a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The process is carried out under mild conditions with regards to temperature, pH and ...

Hierarchical porous structures have been gathering interest in different fields owing to their unique properties associated with their multi-scale features. The observation of natural materials brought new insights into the functionality of cellular materi ...

In the field of sustainability, scholars, and policy-makers herald the transformative power of participation in knowledge production. However, a discrepancy between these expectations and the limited understanding of the complex interactions constituting p ...

The conversion of sugarcane, the world's largest crop, to energy vectors, namely first and second-generation ethanol and electricity, is an ongoing scientific endeavor. This conversion makes use of complex processes with numerous unit operations and proces ...

When conducting workshops with business people, there is a significant risk to become bogged down in the details of the underlying business process rather than seeing the big picture of the value provided by the process to its stakeholders. In this paper, ...

Although our work lies in the field of random processes, this thesis was originally motivated by signal processing applications, mainly the stochastic modeling of sparse signals. We develop a mathematical study of the innovation model, under which a signal ...

The purpose of the roadmap proposed by IRGC is to recommend a structured process that organisations can follow in their transition towards the development of precision medicine. The process is adaptable, and each organisation should further develop it to a ...

The vision brought forth by Michael Hammer in the late 1980s was to save struggling American companies by getting them to focus on the creation of value for clients by reorganizing their operations and structure around the use of IT systems. This was the B ...

We study the interface of the symmetric multitype contact process on Z. In this process, each site of Z is either empty or occupied by an individual of one of two species. Each individual dies with rate 1 and attempts to give birth with rate 2R lambda; the ...

Transmission faults allow us to reason about permanent and transient value faults in a uniform way. However, all existing solutions to consensus in this model are either in the synchronous system, or require strong conditions for termination, that exclude ...

We introduce in this thesis the idea of a variable lookback model, i.e., a model whose predictions are based on a variable portion of the information set. We verify the intuition of this model in the context of experimental finance. We also propose a novel ...

This study proposes a semi-automatic approach aimed at detecting conflict in conversations. The approach is based on statistical techniques capable of identifying turn-organization regularities associated with conflict. The only manual step of the process ...

Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) are an increasingly popular framework for modeling neural spike trains. They have been linked to the theory of stochastic point processes and researchers have used this relation to assess goodness-of-fit using methods from ...

Personal digital assistants or mobile phones applications are not anymore restricted to multimedia or wireless communications, but have been extended to handle Global Positioning System (GPS) functionalities. Consequently, the growing market of GPS capable ...
