Long Range (LoRa) is an emerging low-power wide-area network technology offering long-range wireless connectivity to Internet of Things (IoT) devices. For energy efficiency reasons, LoRa end nodes implement a nonslotted ALOHA multiple access scheme to tran ...

LoRaWAN is a low-power wireless technology that provides long-range connectivity to battery-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. To minimize the energy consumption of the IoT nodes, LoRaWAN networks use for the uplink a pure non-slotted ALOHA multiple ...

Base station (BS) architectures for massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless systems are equipped with hundreds of antennas to serve tens of users on the same time-frequency channel. The immense number of BS antennas incurs hi ...

Over the last few years, residential and enterprise networking have faced several challenges due to the increasing demand of users for high-throughput connectivity. As a result, efforts are being made to improve coverage, throughput, and robustness. Severa ...

Aside from intentional interference, multipath is the most significant error source for Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) receivers in many operational scenarios. In this thesis, we study the multipath estimation from two different perspectives: t ...

The steady growth of capacity demand in telecommunication networks has sparked the development of various photonic devices for ultrafast optical signal processing functions to meet the requirements of future flexible fiber networks in general and backbone ...

We establish the existence of wave-like solutions to spatially coupled graphical models which, in the large size limit, can be characterized by a 1-D real-valued state. This is extended to a proof of the threshold saturation phenomenon for all such models, ...

MIMO techniques allow remarkable improvements in the reliability and/or transmission rate of wireless communication systems. However, there are several major challenges towards the implementation of conventional MIMO concept in terminals with size, cost, a ...

Mobile communication - anytime, anywhere access to data and communication services - has been continuously increasing since the operation of the first wireless communication link by Guglielmo Marconi. The demand for higher data rates, despite the limited b ...

Crucial developments to the recently introduced signal-space approach for multiplexing multiple data symbols using a single-radio switched antenna are presented. First, we introduce a general framework for expressing the spatial multiplexing relation of th ...

We consider the problem of estimating sparse communication channels in the MIMO context. In small to medium bandwidth communications, as in the current standards for OFDM and CDMA communication systems (with bandwidth up to 20 MHz), such channels are indiv ...

We consider the joint estimation of multipath channels obtained with a set of receiving antennas and uniformly probed in the frequency domain. This scenario fits most of the modern outdoor communication protocols for mobile access (ETSI Std. 125 913) or di ...

In sensor networks and communication systems, one is often confronted with sampling multiple sparse signals having a common support set. Multipath channels in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication setting is an interesting example ...

In order to exploit the full multiplexing gain of multi-antenna multi-user downlink schemes, accurate channel state information at the transmitter (i.e., at the base station) is required. We consider the design of a closed-loop channel state information fe ...

Energy-detection (ED) receivers can take advantage of the ranging and multipath resistance capabilities of impulse-radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) physical layers at a much lower complexity than coherent receivers. However, ED receivers are extremely vulnera ...

This paper brings additional light on the previously proposed two-step tracking algorithm for E1 CBOC tracking. More specifically, assessment of the different DLL and PLL tracking loop architectures are analyzed, taking into consideration coherent and non- ...

The present paper proposes and studies an algorithm to estimate chan- nels with a sparse common support (SCS). It is a generalization of the classical sampling of signals with Finite Rate of Innovation (FRI) and thus called SCS-FRI. It is applicable to OFD ...

The focus of this thesis is on communication over cooperative information networks. In the first half of the thesis, we consider lossy source coding problems where a relay assists in the communication of a source stream between two terminals. The following ...

Non-coherent energy-detection receivers are an attractive choice for IEEE 802.15.4a networks. They can exploit the ranging capabilities and the multipath resistance of impulse-radio ultra-wide band (IR-UWB) at a low complexity. However, IEEE 802.15.4a rece ...

We propose a new decoding algorithm based on a cascade structure for impulsive noise correction in multicarrier systems such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based systems. This new cascade structure based algorithm has the advantage to ...
