Hand gestures are one of the most natural and expressive way for humans to convey information, and thus hand gesture recognition has become a research hotspot in the human-machine interface (HMI) field. In particular, biological signals such as surface ele ...

Displaced communication, whereby individuals communicate regarding a subject that is not immediately present (spatially or temporally), is one of the key features of human language. It also occurs in a few animal species, most notably the honeybee, where t ...

Cographs constitute a small point in the atlas of graph classes. However, by zooming in on this point, we discover a complex world, where many parameters jump from finiteness to infinity. In the present paper, we identify several milestones in the world of ...

The Vehicle Dynamic Model (VDM) based navigation of fixed-wing drones determines the airborne trajectory in conjunction with Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensors. Without Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) signals, this method estimates navigati ...

Speech signal conveys several kinds of information such as a message, speaker identity, emotional state of the speaker and social state of the speaker. Automatic speech assessment is a broad area that refers to using automatic methods to predict human judg ...

Most prosthetic limbs can autonomously move with dexterity, yet they are not perceived by the user as belonging to their own body. Robotic limbs can convey information about the environment with higher precision than biological limbs, but their actual perf ...

The metabolic activity of living organisms results in cellular motion on a nanometric scale that can be efficiently detected by micro- and nano- fabricated sensors. Quartz crystal microbalance and atomic force microscopy (AFM) inspired techniques have rece ...

This Review discusses non-invasive and invasive technologies for conveying artificial sensory feedback through bionic hands. ...

Deterministic protocols are well-known tools to obtain extended formulations, with many applications to polytopes arising in combinatorial optimization. Although constructive, those tools are not output-efficient, since the time needed to produce the exten ...

This thesis is devoted to information-theoretic aspects of community detection. The importance of community detection is due to the massive amount of scientific data today that describes relationships between items from a network, e.g., a social network. I ...

Intracortical microstimulation (ICMS) of the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) can produce percepts that mimic somatic sensation and, thus, has potential as an approach to sensorize prosthetic limbs. However, it is not known whether ICMS could recreate act ...

Neuroprosthetics and neuromodulation represent a promising field for several related applications in the central and peripheral nervous system, such as the treatment of neurological disorders, the control of external robotic devices, and the restoration of ...

2-level polytopes naturally appear in several areas of mathematics, including combinatorial optimization, polyhedral combinatorics, communication complexity, and statistics. We investigate upper bounds on the product of the number of facets and the number ...

Caenorhabditis elegans is one of the most attractive model organisms in biomedical research for understanding human diseases and for drug testing at a whole-organism level, since many biological pathways and genes have been conserved between itself and hum ...

Metabolism is a network of biochemical reactions that converts carbon sources to cellu-lar fuels and building blocks. Metabolism of many organisms has been studied for many decades. These studies define metabolism as a very large and complex network. Stoic ...

Detection of curvilinear structures has long been of interest due to its wide range of applications. Large amounts of imaging data could be readily used in many fields, but it is practically not possible to analyze them manually. Hence, the need for automa ...

There remains a great deal of uncertainty about uncertainty estimation in hydrological modeling. Given that hydrology is still a subject limited by the available measurement techniques, it does not appear that the issue of epistemic error in hydrological d ...

In this thesis we investigate a number of problems related to 2-level polytopes, in particular from the point of view of the combinatorial structure and the extension complexity. 2-level polytopes were introduced as a generalization of stable set polytopes ...

The aim of this study was to identify the best subset of body segments that provides for a rapid and reliable detection of the transition from steady walking to a slipping event. Fifteen healthy young subjects managed unexpected perturbations during walkin ...

Phonological classes define articulatory-free and articulatory-bound phone attributes. Deep neural network is used to estimate the probability of phonological classes from the speech signal. In theory, a unique combination of phone attributes form a phonem ...
