The development of manganese (Mn)-rich cathodes for Li-ion batteries promises to alleviate potential supply chain bottlenecks in battery manufacturing. Fundamental challenges in Mn-rich cathodes arise from phenomena such as structural changes due to cooper ...

The transition towards decentralised and decarbonised electricity systems requires a detailed understanding of residential energy demand to inform effective Demand-Side Management (DSM) strategies. Current modelling approaches predominantly rely on socio-d ...

This paper proposes a methodology to optimize the dispatch and reserve between multiple units in a Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) that makes use of the Hydraulic Short Circuit (HSC) operating mode. HSC allows for the simultaneous generation and pumping fr ...

Data-driven building energy modeling is an emerging solution to facilitate the implementation of energy-flexible buildings. However, its black-box nature hinders interpretation, including with respect to human-building interaction. This drawback may bring ...

Drastic variations of energy costs are witnessed in past decades, especially for low-carbon technologies, where decreasing and increasing trends co-existed. Estimating the cost evolution in the future is hence essential in long-term energy planning. Despit ...

A successful decarbonization of the European Union, coupled with a high integration of renewable energy and ambitious targets for energy efficiency, can only be reached with a significant contribution from transport. This sector currently represents a quar ...

Superionic phases of bulk anhydrous salts based on large cluster-like polyhedral (carba)borate anions are generally stable only well above room temperature, rendering them unsuitable as solid-state electrolytes in energy-storage devices that typically oper ...

Producing hydrogen from water using a redox mediator on solid electrocatalyst particles in a reactor offers several advantages over classical electrolysis in terms of safety, membrane degradation, purity and flexibility. Herein, vanadium-mediated hydrogen ...

Improving the performances of photovoltaic (PV) devices by suppressing nonradiative energy losses through surface defect passivation and enhancing the stability to the level of standard PV represents one critical challenge for perovskite solar cells. Here, ...

Power-to-gas plants have recently gained more attraction as these storage systems can be deployed in the European energy grid to ease the integration of renewable energy sources. Most studies in this field address several aspects, from their technical perf ...

The transition towards decarbonized and efficient energy systems has broad socio-economic implications. We estimate the potential impacts on employment from efforts in energy efficiency in industry, transport and buildings as well as substituting local ren ...

Thermal energy storage using the effects of the latent heat in the solid-liquid phase transformation has found its way into every day applications. Reusable, organic phase change media stabilize low temperatures of parcels, and salt/water tanks act as buff ...

Uncertainties of demand, generation and component outage can lead to black-outs in the grid. This study proposes an optimization algorithm (based on Benders Decomposition (BD)) to optimize a Power Transmission System (PTS) that is robust to aforementioned ...

The use of biomass gasification for partially or totally replacing methane in the integrated syngas and ammonia production plant is compared with the performance of the conventional route, typically based on steam methane reforming. However, by undertaking ...

The CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising avenue to convert greenhouse gases into high-value fuels and chemicals, in addition to being an attractive method for storing intermittent renewable energy. Although polycrystalline Cu surfaces have ...

Uncertainty levels in forecasting of renewable generation and demand are known to affect the amount of reserve required to operate the power grid with a given level of reliability. In this paper, we quantify the effects on the system reserve and reliabilit ...

Previous studies have identified links between the urban form and the performance of urban energy systems. Land use and density are two important aspects of urban planning and design. This paper studies the relationship between these aspects and the perfor ...

We present the design (hardware + software) of “Peta-pico-Voltron”, a low-current high voltage power supply for electrostatic actuators. Developed primarily for dielectric elastomer actuators, it offers a low-cost solution to generate user controllable vol ...

The recombination of injected electrons with oxidized redox species and regeneration behavior of copper redox mediators are investigated for four copper complexes, [Cu(dmby)2]2+/1+ (dmby = 6,6′-dimethyl-2,2′- bipyridine), [Cu(tmby)2]2+/1+ (tmby = 4,4′,6,6′ ...

CO2 is used more and more as a refrigerant in the commercial and food retail industries and a majority of experts believe that its share in the field of residential heating, commercial refrigeration and mobile air conditioning across Europe will be higher ...
