In two-stage solid-state transformers with input-series output-parallel structure, the LLC converter operating at a fixed switching frequency is a common choice for the isolated DC/DC conversion stage because it can provide a high efficiency and a fixed vo ...

The goal of this thesis is to propose pragmatic solutions to real challenges faced in the industry. The scope of this thesis encompasses two subjects: frequency-based structured controller synthesis for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems on one side, and ...

Solid-State Transformers with Input-Series/Output-Parallel configuration offer a convenient solution for AC/DC conversion due to their scalability and modularity. In this configuration, each module experiences a second-order harmonic ripple caused by local ...

The European Union's Green Deal aims for a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. To reach this goal, a massive integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) into the power grid is necessary. As RES become a large part of the electricity genera ...

The progress towards intelligent systems and digitalization relies heavily on the use of automation technology. However, the growing diversity of control objects presents significant challenges for traditional control approaches, as they are highly depende ...

The thesis presents methods for controlling and planning distributed energy resources (DERs) in active distribution networks (ADNs). It deals with three main challenges: (i) developing and experimentally validating grid-aware real-time control frameworks, ...

AC/DC power distribution networks use various types of power converters to interconnect their buses, active front ends between AC and DC buses, and DC transformers between DC buses. Different active front end control methods, like voltage or power regulati ...

In engineering, oscillatory instabilities and resonances are often considered undesirable flow features and measures are taken to avoid them. This may include avoiding certain parametric regions or implementing control and mitigation strategies. However, t ...

Increasing adoption of smart meters and phasor measurement units (PMUs) in power distribution networks are enabling the adoption of data-driven/model-less control schemes to mitigate grid issues such as over/under voltages and power-flow congestions. Howev ...

Operation of a tokamak device requires the coordinated operation of a multitude of systems. The sequence of operations during a discharge is both too complex and fast for human interaction. A common way of operation is a predefined sequence of operations w ...

Ion cyclotron (IC) wave assisted breakdown has the potential to increase the robustness of plasma initiation during the ITER pre-fusion operation phase. Studies were performed at JET at ITER relevant loop electric field, E-loop ? 0.33 Vm(-1), and a range o ...

This paper proposes a Linear Parameter-Varying loop-shaping controller for a power-synchronized grid-following inverter (PSGFLI). This control strategy regulates the inverter output active and reactive power at the terminal instead of the point of connecti ...

This thesis presents an efficient and extensible numerical software framework for real-time model-based control. We are motivated by complex and challenging mechatronic applications spanning from flight control of fixed-wing aircraft and thrust vector cont ...

This paper proposes a Control by Interconnection design, for a class of constrained Port-Hamiltonian systems, which is based on an associated Model Predictive Control optimization problem. This associated optimization problem allows to consider both state ...

Sound absorption at low frequencies still remains a challenge in both scientific research and engineering practice. Natural porous materials are ineffective in this frequency range, as well as acoustic resonators which present too narrow bandwidth of absor ...

This thesis addresses theoretical and practical aspects of identification and subsequent control of self-exciting point processes. The main contributions correspond to four separate scientific papers. In the first paper, we address the challenge of robust ...

Picking up objects to toss them on a conveyor belt are activities generated on a daily basis in the industry. These tasks are still done largely by humans. This paper proposes a unified motion generator for a bimanual robotic systems that enables two 7 deg ...

Phasor measurement units (PMU) rely on an accurate time-synchronization to phase-align the phasors and timestamp the voltage and current phasor measurements. Among the symmetrical components computed from the phasors in three-phase systems, the standard pr ...

Accounting for more than 40% of global energy consumption, residential and commercial buildings will be key players in any future green energy systems. To fully exploit their potential while ensuring occupant comfort, a robust control scheme is required to ...

The recent trend of an increasing share of renewable energy sources in modern power systems, as well as the integration of power electronics equipment, is shaping the requirements for stable grid infrastructure. These requirements mainly come from the stab ...
