On edge states in semi-infinite quantum Hall systems

Résumé

We consider an electron in two dimensions submitted to a magnetic field and to the potential of impurities. We show that when the electron is confined to a half-space by a planar wall described by a smooth increasing potential, the total Hamiltonian necessarily has a continuous spectrum in some intervals in between the Landau levels provided that both the amplitude and spatial variation of the impurity potential are sufficiently weak. The spatial decay of the impurity potential is not needed. In particular, this proves the occurrence of edge states in semi-infinite quantum Hall systems.

Distance decay

Distance decay is a geographical term which describes the effect of distance on cultural or spatial interactions. The distance decay effect states that the interaction between two locales declines as the distance between them increases. Once the distance is outside of the two locales' activity space, their interactions begin to decrease. It is thus an assertion that the mathematics of the inverse square law in physics can be applied to many geographic phenomena, and is one of the ways in which physics principles such as gravity are often applied metaphorically to geographic situations.

Potentiel de repos

Le potentiel de repos membranaire (RMP, pour l'anglais resting membrane potential) est le potentiel électrochimique de membrane de la membrane plasmique d'une cellule excitable lorsqu'elle est au repos ; c'est un des états possibles du potentiel de la membrane. En introduisant une électrode de mesure à l'intérieur de la cellule (voir la méthode de patch-clamp), on constate une différence de potentiel : la face interne de la membrane est négative par rapport à une électrode de référence placée sur la face externe de la membrane.
