The thesis is dedicated to the study of two main partial differential equations (PDEs) in fluid dynamics: the Navier-Stokes equations, which describe the motion of incompressible fluids, and the transport equation with divergence-free velocity fields, whic ...

We relate discrepancy theory with the classic scheduling problems of minimizing max flow time and total flow time on unrelated machines. Specifically, we give a general reduction that allows us to transfer discrepancy bounds in the prefix Beck-Fiala (bound ...

We present a general framework for portfolio risk management in discrete time, based on a replicating martingale. This martingale is learned from a finite sample in a supervised setting. Our method learns the features necessary for an effective low-dimensi ...

With the increasing dominance of SSDs for local storage, today's network mounted virtual disks can no longer offer competitive performance. We propose a Log-Structured Virtual Disk (LSVD) that couples log-structured approaches at both the cache and storage ...

In this paper, we propose a novel semi-supervised active salient object detection (SOD) method that actively acquires a small subset of the most discriminative and representative samples for labeling. Two main contributions have been made to prevent the me ...

We consider the problem of enhancing user privacy in common data analysis and machine learning development tasks, such as data annotation and inspection, by substituting the real data with samples from a generative adversarial network. We propose employing ...

Digital images enable quantitative analysis of material properties at micro and macro length scales, but choosing an appropriate resolution when acquiring the image is challenging. A high resolution means longer image acquisition and larger data requiremen ...

We derive an upper bound on the reliability function of mismatched decoding for zero-rate codes. The bound is based on a result by Komlos that shows the existence of a subcode with certain symmetry properties. The bound is shown to coincide with the expurg ...

Despite their irresistible success, deep learning algorithms still heavily rely on annotated data, and unsupervised settings pose many challenges, such as finding the right inductive bias in diverse scenarios. In this paper, we propose an object-centric mo ...

Furstenberg has associated to every topological group G a universal boundary partial derivative(G). If we consider in addition a subgroup H < G, the relative notion of (G,H)-oundaries admits again a maximal object partial derivative(G, H). In the case of d ...

We answer a question left open in [4] and [3], by proving that the blow-up of minimizers u of the lower dimensional obstacle problem is unique at generic point of the free boundary. ...

Existing reference (RF)-based super-resolution (SR) models try to improve perceptual quality in SR under the assumption of the availability of high-resolution RF images paired with low-resolution (LR) inputs at testing. As the RF images should be similar i ...

We prove that rationally connected Calabi-Yau 3-folds with Kawamata log terminal (klt) singularities form a birationally bounded family, or more generally, rationally connected 3 folds of epsilon-CY type form a birationally bounded family for epsilon > 0. ...

Sharing photos online has become an extremely popular activity, raising a wide concern on privacy issues related to the shared content. ProShare, a photo-sharing solution developed by Multimedia Signal Processing Group of EPFL addresses some of these priva ...

Fuzzing is a testing technique to discover unknown vulnerabilities in software. When applying fuzzing to libraries, the core idea of supplying random input remains unchanged, yet it is non-trivial to achieve good code coverage. Libraries cannot run as stan ...

We present Mmkg, a collection of three knowledge graphs that contain both numerical features and (links to) images for all entities as well as entity alignments between pairs of KGs. Therefore, multi-relational link prediction and entity matching communiti ...

We present LANCET, a self-correcting tool designed to measure the open-loop tail latency of µs-scale datacenter applications with high fan-in connection patterns. LANCET is self-correcting as it relies on online statistical tests to determine situations in ...

This paper compares the gyrokinetic instabilities and transport in two representative JET pedestals, one (pulse 78697) from the JET configuration with a carbon wall (C) and another (pulse 92432) from after the installation of JET's ITER-like Wall (ILW). Th ...
