While momentum-based accelerated variants of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) are widely used when training machine learning models, there is little theoretical understanding on the generalization error of such methods. In this work, we first show that th ...

In this work, we investigate the effect of momentum on the optimisation trajectory of gradient descent. We leverage a continuous-time approach in the analysis of momentum gradient descent with step size

By operating with the Scale Relativity Theory in the dynamics of complex systems, we can achieve a description of these complex systems through a holographic-type perspective. Then, gauge invariances of a Riccati-type become functional in complex system dy ...

Reservoir sedimentation is a key challenge for storage sustainability because it causes volume loss, affecting hydropower production capacity, dam safety, and flood management. A preliminary EPFL study proposed and studied an innovative device (called SEDM ...

Sediment transport in geophysical boundary layer flows has relevance to a broad spectrum of sciences ranging from the physical and chemical, to the biological, ecological and geological. Advances in sediment transport modelling and prediction strongly suff ...

The ecological effects of dams on sediment and river flow have been subject to an increasing attention, leading to the implementation of mitigation measures such as environmental flow release and sediment replenishment. However, fine sediment dynamics have ...

This work studies the nearshore hydrodynamics of a shallow turbulent flow entering a laterally unconfined quiescent ambient with a sloping bottom boundary. Examples of such flow are neutrally buoyant ebb tidal jets and hyperpycnal river plumes entering ope ...

The deposition of fine sediment on top of the riverbed affects the reproduction of spawning fishes and some species of benthos. The clogging of the substrate resulting from this deposition is a well-known issue in rivers affected by anthropogenic activity ...

Collaborative learning algorithms, such as distributed SGD (or D-SGD), are prone to faulty machines that may deviate from their prescribed algorithm because of software or hardware bugs, poisoned data or malicious behaviors. While many solutions have been ...

Bedload transport often exhibits dual-mode behavior due to interactions of spatiotemporal controlling factors with the migrating three-dimensional bedforms (characterized by the fully developed patterns in the bed, such as alternate bars, pools, and cluste ...

In mountain regions, steep streams play an important role in water and sediment connectivity. In these highly dynamic systems, water flow features, sediment fluxes and stream morphologies are tightly interlinked over a broad range of temporal and spatial s ...

A turbidity current is a turbulent, particle-laden gravity current that is driven by density differences resulting from the presence of suspended sediment particles. The current travels downslope, bearing a large amount of sediment over a great distance, a ...

In this study, we present the deep learning image segmentation model for drone-based grain size analysis of gravel bars called GALET. The objectives are to quantify the performance of the code and to test its applicability in river research and management. ...

During past periods of advance, Arctic glaciers and ice sheets overrode soil, sediments, and vegetation and buried significant stores of organic matter (OM); these glaciers are now shrinking rapidly due to climate warming. Little is known about the biogeoc ...

Microbial life in glacier-fed streams (GFSs) is dominated by benthic biofilms which fulfill critical ecosystem processes. However, it remains unclear how the bacterial communities of these biofilms assemble in stream ecosystems characterized by rapid turno ...

The inner velocity structure and particle concentration profile of opaque turbidity currents were mea- sured simultaneously by ultrasound velocity profilers. Currents consisting of a quartz particle suspension were generated by using the lock-exchange meth ...

A mixture model to take into account the flow of small carbon dioxide bubbles dissolved in a liquid is presented. The model describes the evolution of the velocity fields (mixture and gas), the pressure and the volume fraction of gas. The system of equatio ...

The balance of pseudomomentum is discussed and applied to simple elasticity, ideal fluids, and the mechanics of inextensible rods and sheets. A general framework is presented in which the simultaneous variation of an action with respect to position, time, ...

In this paper, we aim at unveiling the underlying physical mechanism for transversal optical forces, appearing due to the simultaneous illumination of a spherical object with two plane waves possessing different polarizations. The appearance of such a tran ...

A porous medium-based representation of nuclear reactors and complex engineering systems more in general can significantly reduce simulation and modelling costs, while preserving a reasonable degree of accuracy via regime map-based correlations for modelli ...
