The ongoing electrification of the transportation fleet will increase the load on the electric power grid. Since both the transportation network and the power grid already experience periods of significant stress, joint analyses of both infrastructures wil ...

This chapter explores touristic infrastructures as politics of ambiance, paying attention to the way they enable urban environment and engage pedestrians to experience cities critically. This issue will be documented through an ethnographic study of two to ...

Ridesourcing has driven a lot of attention in recent years with the expansion of companies like Uber, Lift, and many others around the world. Companies use mobile applications connected through the internet to match drivers and their passengers real-time. ...

The new era of shared economy has raised our expectations to make mobility more sustainable through better utilization of existing resources and capacity. In this thesis, we focus on the design of transport systems that stimulate multi-purpose trips with t ...

Moving walkways are pedestrian dedicated hardware which generally decrease pedestrian travel time. We propose the utilization of these devices to dynamically control pedestrian flows in order to improve pedestrian dynamics. Three variations of a control st ...

Encouraging a modal shift from individual transportation to less polluting modes such as public transport, walking and cycling, is now a key recommendation of the UN to reach the goals set by the Paris Agreement. Achieving this ambitious goal requires a de ...

Forecasting pedestrians' future motions is essential for autonomous driving systems to safely navigate in urban areas. However, existing prediction algorithms often overly rely on past observed trajectories and tend to fail around abrupt dynamic changes, s ...

Pedestrians, like drivers, generally dislike congestion. This is true for most pedestrian environments: trains stations, airports, or shopping malls. Furthermore, pedestrian congestion also influences the attractiveness of public transportation networks. T ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructure is becoming critical in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing pedestrian demand. This is particularly true for train stations as in many dense cities space i ...

Urbanization intensifies as a global trend, exposing transportation networks to ever increasing levels of congestion. As network usage increases with available infrastructure, building new roads is not a solution. Design of intelligent transportation syste ...

The modeling of walking behavior and design of walk-friendly urban pathways have been of interest to many researchers over the past decades. One of the major issues in pedestrian modeling is path planning decision-making in a dynamic walking environment wi ...

The new era of sharing information and "big data" has raised our expectations to make mobility more predictable and controllable through a better utilization of data and existing resources. The realization of these opportunities requires going beyond the e ...

In this thesis, we developed a research direction that combines the theoretical concepts of complex networks with practical needs and applications in the field of transportation engineering. As a first objective we analyzed the phenomenon of congestion pr ...

Human mobility in large cities is a complex dynamical system with high density of population, many transport modes to compete for limited available space and many operators that try to efficiently manage different parts of this system. New emerging modes o ...

Exploiting the full potential of pedestrian infrastructures is becoming vital in many environments which cannot be easily expanded to cope with the increasing demand. This is particularly true of train stations in many dense cities since space is limited. ...

We introduce a probabilistic modeling approach for pedestrian speed density relationship. It is motivated by a high scatter in real data that precludes the use of traditional equilibrium relationships. To characterize the observed pattern, we relax the hom ...

Road space distribution among multiple modes of transport in urban networks has attracted the interest of several researchers and policy planners. Traditionally, these problems are solved by ignoring operational and dynamic characteristics of multi-modal c ...

Accurate traffic density estimations is essential for numerous purposes like the developing successful transit policies or to forecast future traffic conditions for navigation. Current developments in the machine learning and computer systems bring the tra ...

Urban transportation is currently experiencing major changes, namely because of disruptive innovations driven by the information and communication technologies (ICTs). During the past few years, ride-booking has emerged in many cities around the world as o ...

A smart design of transport systems involves efficient use and allocation of the limited urban road capacity in the multimodal environment. This paper intends to understand the system-wide effect of dividing the road space to the private and public transpo ...
