Minimax-fair machine learning minimizes the error for the worst-off group. However, empirical evidence suggests that when sophisticated models are trained with standard empirical risk minimization (ERM), they often have the same performance on the worst-of ...

Many pathologies cause impairments in the speech production mechanism resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and communicative ability. To assist the clinical diagnosis, treatment and management of speech disorders, automatic pathological speech asses ...

Motivated by the goal of designing interventions for softening polarized opinions on the Web, and building on results from psychology, we hypothesized that people would be moved more easily towards opposing opinions when the latter were voiced by a celebri ...

This book provides evidence-informed and practical advice on how to design, teach, and facilitate hands-on, experiential learning in practical higher education settings. With rich case studies and carefully considered analysis tasks, all underpinned by res ...

Whereas electron-phonon scattering relaxes the electron's momentum in metals, a perpetual exchange of momentum between phonons and electrons may conserve total momentum and lead to a coupled electron-phonon liquid. Such a phase of matter could be a platfor ...

"Coasean" institutions are an alternative institutional form that provides a solution to some market and coordination failures. As such they can weaken considerably the case for public subsidies in a vast range of context. They are "market-based" and an in ...

Many research efforts have so far been devoted to the topic of shear design of members without transverse reinforcement since the first development in structural concrete. This has allowed a number of significant advances in the understanding of the phenom ...

Background: The importance of sex and gender as modulators of disease biology and treatment outcomes is well known in other disciplines of medicine, such as cardiology, but remains an undervalued issue in oncology. Considering the increasing evidence for t ...

In Switzerland, Germany and Austria, as in many European countries, the transition of the energy sector towards more sustainability is a long-term transition process, unfolding since decades. It however only reached the regime level in recent years and the ...

Empirical evidence suggests that fixed-income markets exhibit unspanned stochastic volatility (USV), that is, that one cannot fully hedge volatility risk solely using a portfolio of bonds. While Collin-Dufresne and Goldstein (2002, Journal of Finance, 57, ...

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a major cause of paralysis with currently no effective treatment. Epidural electrical stimulation (EES) of the lumbar spinal cord has been shown to restore locomotion in animal models of SCI, but has not yet reached the same lev ...

IMPORTANCE A growing number of neurologic treatments rely on neural implants capable of delivering electrical and chemical stimulation to targeted regions of the central nervous system for extended periods. OBJECTIVE To assess the potential of a novel clas ...

This paper describes the application of data assimilation methods to CASMO-5 simulations of a Proteus research reactor experiment. Its focus is a comparison and evaluation of three prominent data assimilation methods: generalized linear least squares, MOCA ...

We have investigated the spin texture of surface Fermi arcs in the recently discovered Weyl semimetal TaAs using spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental results demonstrate that the Fermi arcs are spin polarized. The measured ...

BACKGROUND: Current classification of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is suboptimal, and management is based on weak evidence, with little attempt to personalize treatment. A need exists for new precision medicine and stratified management approaches that inc ...

Lecture videos are the major components in MOOCs. It is common for MOOC analytics researchers to model video behaviors in order to identify at-risk students. Much of the work emphasized prediction. However, we have little empirical understanding about thes ...

Progress in understanding hydration is summarized. Evidence supports the geochemistry dissolution theory as an explanation for the induction period, in preference to the inhibiting layer theory. The growth of C-S-H is the principal factor controlling the m ...

Examining the results of a large set of quasi-static cyclic tests on unreinforced masonry (URM) walls showed that the drift capacity of URM walls reduces with increasing wall size. Such a size effect is of concern since most wall tests were carried out on ...

Augmented paper has been proposed as a way to integrate more easily ICTs in settings like formal education, where paper has a strong presence. However, despite the multiplicity of educational applications using paper-based computing, their deployment in au ...

Objectives: While electronic health record (EHR) systems have potential to drive improvements in healthcare, a majority of EHR implementations fall short of expectations. Shortcomings in implementations are often due to organizational issues around the imp ...
