We study the evolution of a passive scalar subject to molecular diffusion and advected by an incompressible velocity field on a 2D bounded domain. The velocity field is u=del perpendicular to H, where H is an autonomous Hamiltonian whose level sets are Jor ...

Monitoring indoor air quality is important nowdays, as noted by many researchers, since pollution potentially introduces a major impact on the health of people. There are many factors that increase the concentration of a pollutant in a room and there may e ...

In this thesis we will present and analyze randomized algorithms for numerical linear algebra problems. An important theme in this thesis is randomized low-rank approximation. In particular, we will study randomized low-rank approximation of matrix functio ...

This work is concerned with the computation of the action of a matrix function f(A), such as the matrix exponential or the matrix square root, on a vector b. For a general matrix A, this can be done by computing the compression of A onto a suitable Krylov ...

Time-domain solutions of Maxwell’s equations in homogeneous and isotropic media are paramount to studying transient or broadband phenomena. However, analytical solutions are generally unavailable for practical applications, while numerical solutions are co ...

This study introduces the first experimental analysis of shear cavitation in a microscale backward-facing step (BFS) configuration. It explores shear layer cavitation under various flow conditions in a microfluidic device with a depth of 60 μm and a step h ...

In this paper we will consider distributed Linear-Quadratic Optimal Control Problems dealing with Advection-Diffusion PDEs for high values of the Peclet number. In this situation, computational instabilities occur, both for steady and unsteady cases. A Str ...

A key challenge across many disciplines is to extract meaningful information from data which is often obscured by noise. These datasets are typically represented as large matrices. Given the current trend of ever-increasing data volumes, with datasets grow ...

The goal of this work is to use anisotropic adaptive finite elements for the numerical simulation of aluminium electrolysis. The anisotropic adaptive criteria are based on a posteriori error estimates derived for simplified problems. First, we consider an ...

In this work, we analyze space-time reduced basis methods for the efficient numerical simulation of haemodynamics in arteries. The classical formulation of the reduced basis (RB) method features dimensionality reduction in space, while finite difference sc ...

The p-Laplacian problem -del & sdot; ((mu + |del u|(p-2))del u) = f is considered, where mu is a given positive number. An anisotropic a posteriori residual-based error estimator is presented. The error estimator is shown to be equivalent, up to higher ord ...

This paper presents a parameterisation framework based on (inverted) elliptic PDEs for addressing the planar parameterisation problem of finding a valid description of the domain’s interior given no more than a spline-based description of its boundary cont ...

This thesis contributes to the research on the challenging topic of wind turbine wake development in the atmospheric boundary layer. Through a combined theoretical and numerical approach, the focus is on developing new frameworks to predict the wind turbin ...

Modern power distribution systems are experiencing a large-scale integration of Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs). Their presence complicates the analysis and mitigation of harmonics, whose creation and propagation may be amplified ...

We perform an error analysis of a fully discretised Streamline Upwind Petrov Galerkin Dynamical Low Rank (SUPG-DLR) method for random time-dependent advection-dominated problems. The time integration scheme has a splitting-like nature, allowing for potenti ...

In this paper, we consider experimental data available for graphene-based nanolubricants to evaluate their convective heat transfer performance by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Single-phase models with temperature-dependent prope ...

The increasing complexity of transformer models in artificial intelligence expands their computational costs, memory usage, and energy consumption. Hardware acceleration tackles the ensuing challenges by designing processors and accelerators tailored for t ...

Driven by the demand for real-time processing and the need to minimize latency in AI algorithms, edge computing has experienced remarkable progress. Decision-making AI applications stand out for their heavy reliance on data-centric operations, predominantl ...

Literature on linear induction motors (LIMs) has proposed several approaches to model the behavior of such devices for different applications. In terms of accuracy and fidelity, field analysis-based models are the most relevant. Closed-form or numerical so ...

In inverse problems, the task is to reconstruct an unknown signal from its possibly noise-corrupted measurements. Penalized-likelihood-based estimation and Bayesian estimation are two powerful statistical paradigms for the resolution of such problems. They ...
