We present a new contour segmentation method for femoral head detection in CT images. The principal idea underlying our approach is to represent the contour using active rays. Each ray has internal energy (continuity and smoothness constraints), as well as external energy (image-oriented edges and global a-priori knowledge). The causal nature of this representation allows a globally optimal, non-iterative solution to be found using dynamic programming. Moreover, even pathological bone structures can be auto

This paper presents a general method for incorporating prior knowledge into kernel methods such as Support Vector Machines. It applies when the prior knowledge can be formalized by the description of an object around each sample of the training set, assuming that all points in the given object share the same desired class. A~number of implementation techniques of this method, based on hard geometrical objects and soft objects based on distributions are considered. Tangent vectors are extensively used for ob

In multi-hop wireless networks, every node is expected to forward packets for the benefit of other nodes. Yet, if each node is its own authority, then it may selfishly deny packet forwarding in order to save its own resources. Some researchers have proposed to introduce an incentive mechanism in the network that motivates the nodes to cooperate. In this paper, we address the question of whether such an incentive mechanism is necessary or cooperation between the nodes exists in the absence of it. We define a

Mobile ad-hoc networks rely on the cooperation of nodes for routing and forwarding. For individual nodes there are however several advantages resulting from noncooperation, the most obvious being power saving. Nodes that act selfishly or even maliciously pose a threat to availability in mobile ad-hoc networks. Several approaches have been proposed to detect noncooperative nodes. In this paper, we investigate the effect of using rumors with respect to the detection time of misbehaved nodes as well as the rob

Endosseous implant to be applied to a human or animal bone, said implant having a smooth or rough surface texture and wherein said surface has been treated with at least one organic compound carrying at least one phosphonic acid group or a salt thereof and method for producing said implant.

For many years, calorimetry has been recognized as a powerful and universal tool for monitoring chem. and biol. processes. A lab.-scale reaction calorimeter (RC1, Mettler-Toledo), initially developed for chem. reaction studies with a sensitivity of 100-150 mW/l, has been improved to enable the monitoring of very low heat prodn. rates (

Two-phase flow pattern data have been obtained experimentally for R-407C flowing inside 12 mm bore sight glasses, which were located at the outlets of 3 m long, plain bore copper tube heat transfer test sections. The tests covered nominal mass velocities of 100, 200 and 300 kg/m2s, vapor qualities from 5-95%, and a wide range of heat fluxes, all taken at a fixed inlet saturation pressure of 6.45 bar to the evaporator test section. The flow pattern data were compared to the newly developed two-phase frow pat

A new method for the detection of gait cycle phases using only two miniature accelerometers together with a light, portable digital recorder is proposed. Each subject is asked to walk on a walkway at his/her own preferred speed. Gait analysis was performed using an original method of computing the values of temporal parameters from accelerometer signals. First, to validate the accelerometric method, measurements are taken on a group of healthy subjects. No significant differences are observed between the re

After an experimental study of refrigerants HFC-134a, HCFC-123, HFC- 404A and HFC-407C, and considerable modifications to the test stand, LENI has undertaken a new experimental program and has assembled a large new database for evaporation of ammonia and two ammonia-oil mixtures (1% and 3% wt. oil) inside horizontal tubes with smooth and enhanced surfaces. This work extends the current database to include a refrigerant in which there is a marked renewal of interest. The comparison of the ammonia results wit

Lack of precision and inconsistencies in existing correlations, an attempt was successfully made to develop a new and more mechanistically based correlation (Kattan, 1996 [1]) for boiling inside plain tubes. This new general correlation is original in that it takes into account the effect of two phase flow patterns on evaporative heat transfer. As a first step, the Steiner (1993, [4]) flow map was rewieved and a proposal was made to better account for the transition boundaries between stratified-wavy and an

A new method for the separation of forward and backward running waves in elastic conduits, with possible extension to the arterial system, has been developed. The mathematical model is based on the one-dimensional flow equations which allow the treatment of non-periodic or transient pressure and flow pulses. The method is fully nonlinear, i.e. no linearizing assumptions are made. The method includes the effects of convective acceleration and pressure-dependent vessel compliance. A first approximation for th

The ultrasound pulse transmission or echo technique is described for measuring the sp. interfacial area, bubble size, gas hold up, and no. of bubbles per unit vol. in gas-liq. dispersion. Expts. on the application of the method to simulated and real fermns. are described. [on SciFinder (R)]
