Knudsen flow experiments and its interpretation in terms of adsorption/desorption kinetics as well as quantitative uptake on substrates of interest is presented together with the description of critical design parameters of the Knudsen Flow Reactor (KFR). ...

Magnons (spin waves, SWs) are elementary spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials. They are the promising quanta for the transmission and processing of information. Magnons can be coupled to the electromagnetic waves utilized for the wireless com ...

The injection kicker system for the Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh) must satisfy demanding requirements. To achieve low pulse ripple and fast field rise and fall times, the injection system will use ferrite loaded transmission line type magnets. The beam ...

The aim of this thesis is to explore the power and the limits of classical and quantum molecular modelling, for the investigation of the adsorption properties of microporous crystalline materials. The materials analyzed are metal organic frameworks (MOFs) ...

The number of particles in the beams used at CERN is measured by a family of devices called the Beam Current Transformers (BCTs). One of such devices is the DC Current Transformer (DCCT) measuring the total number of particles in an accelerator. The DCCT i ...

We demonstrate that electrospray deposition enables the fabrication of highly periodic self-assembled arrays of Fe4H single molecule magnets on graphene/Ir(111). The energetic positions of molecular states are probed by means of scanning tunneling spectros ...

The copper paddle-wheel is the building unit of many metal organic frameworks. Because of the ability of the copper cations to attract polar molecules, copper paddle-wheels are promising for carbon dioxide adsorption and separation. They have therefore bee ...

Aqueous interfaces are omnipresent in nature. Nonlinear optical methods such as second harmonic and sum frequency generation (SHG/SFG) are valuable techniques to access molecular level information from these interfaces. In the interpretation of SHG and SFG ...

Within this thesis two experiments will be described. In the first experiment a velocity filter was used to obtain a beam of polar molecules (ND3) with a translational temperature of less than 5K. For the first time the dynamics of individual rotational st ...

Magnetite nanoparticles with a size of 5-6 nm with potential impact on biomedicine and information/communication technologies were synthesized by thermal decomposition of Fe(acac)(3) and subsequently coated with a silica shell exploiting a water-in-oil syn ...

Solvated radicals play an important role in many areas of chemistry, but to date, the nature of their interactions with polar solvent molecules lacks chemical interpretation. We present a computational quantum chemical analysis of the binding motives of bi ...

We present high-field magnetization and Br-79 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and Te-125 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies in the weakly coupled Cu2+ (S = 1/2) tetrahedral system Cu2Te2O5Br2. The field-induced level crossing effects were observed ...

Efforts at EPFL to obtain translationally cold neutral molecules are described. Active deceleration of polar molecules is performed by confining the molecules in moving three-dimensional electrostatic traps, and by appropriately choosing the velocity of th ...

We present a thorough Se-77 nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) study of a single crystal of the magnetoelectric compound Cu2OSeO3. The temperature dependence of the local electronic moments extracted from the NMR data is fully consistent with a magnetic phas ...

The magnetic behavior of SmN has been investigated in stoichiometric polycrystalline films. All samples show ferromagnetic order with Curie temperature (T-C) of 27 3 K, evidenced by the occurrence of hysteresis below T-C. The ferromagnetic state is charact ...

We report a comprehensive study of transport, magnetotransport, and magnetic properties of single crystals of BaVSe3. The paramagnetic metal-ferromagnetic metal transition at 43 K was followed as a function of pressure by measuring the electrical resistivi ...

Since contrasts agents are used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), numerous efforts have been done to increase their relaxivity (parameter allowing to quantify contrast agent efficiency). Few years ago, the Merbach group developed the chelating agent DTT ...

The present thesis report deals about the material scientists contribution to the interdisciplinary European project "MAGNANOMED" involving people having very different backgrounds (physicist, chemists, biochemists, veterinary surgeons, ...). The work carr ...
