We address the effect of elastic inhomogeneity on elastic modulus and hardness determinations made by depth-sensing indentations performed on individual particles embedded within a matrix of different elastic modulus. Finite element simulations and nanoind ...

Wyoming-type bentonite is one of the materials to be used as part of the Engineered Barrier System (EBS) in deep geological disposal facilities for the safe disposal of spent nuclear fuel.In the KBS-3 type repository, the canisters containing the spent fue ...

The elastic limit tensile stress of UHPFRC is governed by contributions of the cementitious matrix and the fibrous skeleton. This paper finds that fiber orientation has significant influence on the matrix tensile strength of UHPFRC, while this is not consi ...

An experimental investigation was conducted on the thermophysical and thermomechanical properties of phenolic-basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (P-BFRP) rebars subjected to high temperature. As a comparison, vinylBFRP (V-BFRP) and epoxy-BFRP (E-BFRP) rebars ...

Fast advances in soft robotics and tissue engineering demand for new soft materials whose mechanical properties can be interchangeably and locally varied, thereby enabling, for example, the design of soft joints within an integral material. Inspired by nat ...

Intracranial aneurysm is a cerebrovascular disease characterized by an artery dilation in the brain. An aneurysm is prone to rupture, which causes a life-threatening subarachnoid hemorrhage. The major drawbacks of the current treatments, open surgical clip ...

The aim of this work is the investigation of mesoscale/local variability in mechanical properties of clear timber in the radial direction. Clear Norway spruce wood, Picea abies, was used for cutting specimens of different lengths with a small cross-section ...

There is currently considerable interest in developing stiff, strong, tough, and heat resistant poly(lactide) (PLA) based materials with improved melt elasticity in response to the increasing demand for sustainable plastics. However, simultaneous optimizat ...

In this work, the macrotexture of dense Zn produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) was studied and the mechanical properties for different tensile bar orientations were measured. The compressive strength of LPBF Zn scaffolds with five different unit cel ...

Predicting the evolution of stiffness in cement paste requires linking morphological properties of the microstructure to the evolution of mechanical properties. Measures are typically difficult to obtain with sufficient time resolution to capture the trans ...

This paper addresses the uniaxial tensile response of Strain Hardening Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concretes (SH-UHPFRC) subjected to very low strain rates and low temperatures. The influence of four different strain rates; 1 × 10−5, 1 × 10−7, ...

The tensile response of strain hardening UHPFRC under full restraint, subjected to curing temperatures of 20 °C, 10 °C, 5 °C, was investigated for two types of mixes with silica fume; Mix I with pure type I cement and Mix II with 50% replacement of cement ...

Cast-in-place thin layers of Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (UHPFRC) on the specific zones of existing reinforced concrete (RC) bridge decks has been demonstrated to be a technically efficient and economic rehabilitation an ...

The use of cellular ceramics in enhancing the performance of a high-temperature latent heat thermal energy storage unit was investigated. A detailed design methodology is presented, which consists of a combined analytical-numerical analysis followed by a m ...

A gravity-driven droplet will rapidly flow down an inclined substrate, resisted only by stresses inside the liquid. If the substrate is compliant, with an elastic modulus G < 100 kPa, the droplet will markedly slow as a consequence of viscoelastic braking. ...

The impact of partial water saturation on the mechanical behaviour of clays and claystones has been widely proved. This work aims at demonstrating that also for gas shales partial water saturation has a significant influ-ence on their stiffness and strengt ...

In the seismic design of unreinforced masonry walls, the elastic modulus E and shear modulus G are essential parameters for the calculation of the in-plane wall stiffness. Current codes provide empirical estimates of the elastic modulus and furthermore a r ...

Circumventing inherent embrittlement, poor heat resistance, and melt elasticity of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) without compromising its remarkable stiffness and strength has become a particular challenge in polymer science due to increasing demand for green ma ...

Structural loads, especially in-plane compression, may cause local buckling and debonding of the photovoltaic (PV) cells that are mechanically integrated with structural members and this may lead to degradation in their electrical performance. This paper p ...

This research validates the viability of a recycling and reusing process for end-of-life glass fiber reinforced wind turbine blades. Short glass fibers from scrap turbine blades are reclaimed and mixed with polylactic acid (PLA) through a double extrusion ...
