BergeUne berge est d'abord un talus plongeant dans l'eau, une pente naturelle, aménagée ou entièrement artificielle en contact avec l'eau de la rivière. En ce premier sens, ce terme technique, propre à la batellerie, aux aménageurs ripuaires ou aux maîtres de rivière, diffère fondamentalement de la rive qui est l'espace de terre entre le point haut de ladite berge et la rivière, et correspond à la bordure pentue (relevée ou escarpée) d'un cours d'eau (torrent, rivière, fleuve), ou d'une pièce d'eau fermée (étang, lac).
