In this thesis we will present and analyze randomized algorithms for numerical linear algebra problems. An important theme in this thesis is randomized low-rank approximation. In particular, we will study randomized low-rank approximation of matrix functio ...

This work is concerned with the computation of the action of a matrix function f(A), such as the matrix exponential or the matrix square root, on a vector b. For a general matrix A, this can be done by computing the compression of A onto a suitable Krylov ...

This paper introduces a novel method for data-driven robust control of nonlinear systems based on the Koopman operator, utilizing Integral Quadratic Constraints (IQCs). The Koopman operator theory facilitates the linear representation of nonlinear system d ...

The paper details the process of developing the ITER Plasma Control System (PCS), that is, how to design and deploy it systematically, in the most efficient and effective manner. The integrated nature of the ITER PCS, with its multitude of coupled control ...

Sylvester matrix equations are ubiquitous in scientific computing. However, few solution techniques exist for their generalized multiterm version, as they now arise in an increasingly large number of applications. In this work, we consider algebraic parame ...

In this paper, we present the first results of a systematically designed multi-input multi-output gas-injection controller on Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). We demonstrate the simultaneous real-time control of the NII emission front position and l ...

Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- (PT-) and anti-PT-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian sp ...

The decentralisation and unpredictability of new renewable energy sources require rethinking our energy system. Data-driven approaches, such as reinforcement learning (RL), have emerged as new control strategies for operating these systems, but they have n ...

Despite the importance of using artifacts during the design thinking process, there is a limited understanding of the influence of tangibles with lower perceptual richness on design thinking skills within educational settings. It is speculated that tangibl ...

The modern world is heavily reliant on electromagnetic devices to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy and vice versa. These devices are fundamental to powering our society, and the growing need for automated production lines and electrified tr ...

In accordance with the Paris agreement, the Swiss Climate Strategy (SCS) defines the net-zero target to be reached before 2050, which demands for a thoughtful carbon budget allocation between the different contributors. Ongoing normalization tasks are curr ...

Training science and engineering students to become responsible citizens and professionals requires novel and creative pedagogical approaches, such as design thinking. This concept relies on processes and tools to develop creativity and problem-solving ski ...

A new approach is presented to obtain a convex set of robust D—stabilizing fixed structure controllers, relying on Cauchy's argument principle. A convex set of D—stabilizing controllers around an initial D—stabilizing controller for a multi-model set is re ...

In this thesis we propose and analyze algorithms for some numerical linear algebra tasks: finding low-rank approximations of matrices, computing matrix functions, and estimating the trace of matrices. In the first part, we consider algorithms for building ...

This work is concerned with approximating matrix functions for banded matrices, hierarchically semiseparable matrices, and related structures. We develop a new divide-and-conquer method based on (rational) Krylov subspace methods for performing low-rank up ...

The ability to consider a wide range of solutions to a design problem is a crucial skill for designers, and is a major differentiator between experts and novices. One reason for this is that novices are unaware of the full extent of the design space in whi ...

The Schur decomposition of a square matrix A is an important intermediate step of state-of-the-art numerical algorithms for addressing eigenvalue problems, matrix functions, and matrix equations. This work is concerned with the following task: Compute a (m ...

Design exploration is a creative process that consists of the incremental generation of design candidates. Supported by digital means or not, the process handles the ill-structured nature of design and allows creativity to flourish through diversity of des ...

This work develops novel rational Krylov methods for updating a large-scale matrix function f(A) when A is subject to low-rank modifications. It extends our previous work in this context on polynomial Krylov methods, for which we present a simplified conve ...

The primary objective of this doctoral thesis is the design and development of hierarchical control schemes for the overall operation and control of Islanded mGs (ImGs) with flexible structuresâ or, with no reference topologies. The control methodologies ...
