Elongated plasmas lead to improved performance in tokamaks but make the plasma prone to vertical instability, which requires active feedback control, a critical issue for future fusion reactors. Vertical control was optimized for the TCV tokamak by applyin ...

Heavy impurity accumulation poses a problem for the operation of tokamaks featuring tungsten plasma facing components. Early termination of the plasma due to tungsten accumulation is often observed following long living 3D MHD perturbations. Such scenari ...

The plasma design point during stationary phase operation of EU-DEMO has been described extensively in the past, and the assumptions employed for its definition have been supported by various investigations. However, a stationary snapshot is by far not suf ...

A self-consistent model is presented for the simulation of a multi-component plasma in the tokamak boundary. A deuterium plasma is considered, with the plasma species that include electrons, deuterium atomic ions and deuterium molecular ions, while the deu ...

The overall performance of a tokamak strongly depends on phenomena that take place in a thin region between the main plasma and the vessel wall, which is denoted as tokamak boundary. In fact, the formation of transport barriers in this region can significa ...

In situ, two-dimensional (2D) Langmuir probe measurements across a large part of the TCV outer divertor are reported in L-mode discharges with and without divertor baffles. This provides detailed insights into time averaged profiles, particle fluxes, and f ...

We present recent highlights from the most recent operation phases of Wendelstein 7-X, the most advanced stellarator in the world. Stable detachment with good particle exhaust, low impurity content, and energy confinement times exceeding 100 ms, have been ...

Electron emission from the boundary is ubiquitous in a capacitively coupled plasma (CCP) and precipitates nonnegligible influence on the discharge properties. Here, we present Particle-in-Cell/Monte Carlo Collision simulation of an Ohmic-dominant heating m ...

In the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator, the vacuum rotational transform, ι, has a flat radial profile and does not cross any major rational resonance. Nevertheless, during plasma operation the ι‐profile can be strongly modified by electron cyclotron cur ...

Internal kinks are a common magneto hydro-dynamic (MHD) instability observed in tokamak operation when the q profile in the plasma core is close to unity. This MHD instability impacts both the transport of the bulk plasma (current, particle and energy tran ...

Short bursts (similar to 1 ms) of gas, injecting similar to 10(17)-10(18) molecules of hydrogen and/or deuterium, lead to the observation of cold pulse propagation phenomenon in hydrogen plasmas of the ADITYA-U tokamak. After every injection, a sharp incre ...

A Fast Ion Loss Detector (FILD) was designed, assembled, installed and commissioned for TCV. This is a radially positionable, scintillator based detector that provides information on the 2D fast-ion velocity space lost at the probe's location. The collecte ...

Thermonuclear controlled fusion is a promising answer to the current energy and climate issues, providing a safe carbon-free source of energy which is virtually inexhaustible. In magnetic confinement thermonuclear fusion based on tokamak reactors, hydrogen ...

The interaction between neutral particles and the plasma plays a key role in determining the dynamics of the tokamak boundary that, in turn, significantly impact the overall performance of the device. Leveraging the work in Wersal and Ricci [Nucl. Fusion 5 ...
