As machine learning models evolve, maintaining transparency demands more human-centric explainable AI techniques. Counterfactual explanations, with roots in human reasoning, identify the minimal input changes needed to obtain a given output, and hence, are ...

This thesis contributes to the modelling of multivariate rare events by combining extreme value theory and graphical modelling. The central theme involves structural equation models (SEMs), which are powerful tools used to express causal extremal dependenc ...

Mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings are projected to continue being the predominant typology for urban development. Thus, reducing the carbon footprint of such buildings is critical for achieving a sustainable built environment. Reducing the amount of c ...

In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...

Rubble stone masonry is a common construction typology of historical city centres and vernacular architecture. While past earthquakes have shown that it is one of the most vulnerable masonry construction typologies, there are few experimental campaigns giv ...

Machine learning has provided a means to accelerate early-stage drug discovery by combining molecule generation and filtering steps in a single architecture that leverages the experience and design preferences of medicinal chemists. However, designing mach ...

This study presents a self-supervised Bayesian Neural Network (BNN) framework using air-borne Acoustic Emission (AE) to identify different Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF) process regimes such as Lack of Fusion, conduction mode, and keyhole without ground-tr ...

Irregular sampling of time series in electronic health records (EHRs) is one of the main challenges for developing machine learning models. Additionally, the pattern of missing values in certain clinical variables is not at random but depends on the decisi ...

Counting the number of times a patient coughs per day is an essential biomarker in determining treatment efficacy for novel antitussive therapies and personalizing patient care. Automatic cough counting tools must provide accurate information, while runnin ...

This dataset was created as part of the PhD project Machine Understanding of Architectural Space: From Analytical to Generative Applications at EPFL Media and Design Lab (LDM). It was derived from the Cubicasa5K dataset. The dataset contains preprocessed d ...

A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) based optical fibre sensing technique, developed and patented by EPFL, is an efficient and economical way to detect hotspots in High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) applications. Due to the MZI sensitivity being a compo ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

This paper presents experimental testing of a new semi-active vibration control device comprising a shape memory polymer (SMP) core that is reinforced by an SMP-aramid composite skin. This control device works as a load-transfer component that can be integ ...

Early and accurate detection of epileptic seizures is an extremely important therapeutic goal due to the severity of complications it can prevent. To this end, a low-power machine learning-based seizure detection implemented on an FPGA is proposed in this ...

The vibrational response of solid materials and structural components is substantially governed by their mechanical and geometrical properties. Low-frequency vibrations and modal frequencies are sensitive to global geometrical deviations, while high-freque ...

Structural engineers today are still educated mainly to design new structures. This ignores the fact that structures already exist and need to be maintained. Students are thus often ill-equipped to deal with maintenance and preservation of existing structu ...

Managing existing civil infrastructure is challenging due to evolving functional requirements, material aging, and climate change. With increasingly limited economic, environmental, and material resources, more sustainable solutions for practical asset man ...

In the majority of active sound absorbing systems, a conventional electrodynamic loudspeaker is used as a controlled source. However, particular situations may require an actuator that is more resistant to harsh environments, adjustable in shape, and light ...

The management of existing civil infrastructure is becoming more crucial as a large share of bridges is approaching their theoretical end of service duration. Structural performance monitoring aims to verify bridge safety at a given time, and it should be ...

Rationale: Given the expanding number of COVID-19 cases and the potential for new waves of infection, there is an urgent need for early prediction of the severity of the disease in intensive care unit (ICU) patients to optimize treatment strategies.Objecti ...
