Reciprocity is one of the fundamental characteristics of wave propagation in linear time-invariant media with preserved time-reversal symmetry. Breaking reciprocity opens the way to numerous applications in the fields of phononics and photonics, as it allo ...

This paper presents a novel Finite Element (FE) simulation approach to examine the mode I fracture of thick adhesive joints used particularly in the trailing edge of the wind turbine blades. The approach involved FE models of the DCB specimens focusing on ...

When two objects slide against each other, wear and friction occur at their interface. The accumulation of wear forms what is commonly referred to as a ``third-body''. Understanding third-body evolution has significant applications in industry, where contr ...

In this paper, we consider the long-term behavior of some special solutions to the Wave Kinetic Equation. This equation provides a mesoscopic description of wave systems interacting nonlinearly via the cubic NLS equation. Escobedo and Velázquez showed that ...

Bending-active elastica beam is a structural configuration that is based on the elastic deformation of an initially straight beam. This deformation occurs when horizontal displacements are applied to a sliding support, causing the beam to bend into an arch ...

Surface-based inflatables are composed of two thin layers of nearly inextensible sheet material joined together along carefully selected fusing curves. During inflation, pressure forces separate the two sheets to maximize the enclosed volume. The fusing c ...

This thesis investigates the potential of gallium phosphide (GaP) as a platform for advanced integrated photonic devices, leveraging its exceptional optical properties. Significant advantages over traditional materials like silicon nitride (Si3N4) are offe ...

We introduce a Lamb-wave medium with tunable propagation velocities, which are controlled by a two-dimensional heating pattern produced by a laser beam. We utilized it to demonstrate that waves in an appropriately designed medium can propagate in the form ...

The concept of soliton gas was introduced in 1971 by Zakharov as an infinite collection of weakly interacting solitons in the framework of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In this theoretical construction of a diluted (rarefied) soliton gas, solitons with ...

In a recent discovery (Wen et al 2022 Phys. Rev. Lett. 129 045001), streaming waves were found in multipactor-induced plasma discharges. However, due to the limitations of a 1D simulation setup, these waves displayed only transverse dynamics. In this lette ...

Several boreholes were drilled for site comparison of a deep geological repository (DGR) in Northern Switzerland. The main target of the exploration program was the >100m thick Opalinus Clay, the designated host rock encountered at approximately 450 to 100 ...

This data package supports the publication 'Complexity of crack front geometry enhances toughness of brittle solids' by Xinyue Wei, Chenzhuo Li, Cían McCarthy, and John M. Kolinski Nature physics (2024) - https://doi.org/10.1038/s41567-024-02435-x DOI: 1 ...

Here, we introduce a design, fabrication, and control methodology for large amplitude torsional microactuators powered by ultrasound. The microactuators are 3D printed from two polymers with drastically different elastic moduli as a monolithic compliant me ...

We study the flow stability and spatiotemporal spectral dynamics of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) suspensions in a custom Taylor-Couette flow cell using the intrinsic shear induced birefringence and liquid crystalline properties of CNC suspensions for flow v ...

Suspended epitaxial gallium nitride (GaN) on silicon (Si) photonic crystal devices suffer from large residual tensile strain, especially for long waveguides, because fine structures tend to crack due to large stress. By introducing spring-like tethers, des ...

Time reversal exploits the invariance of electromagnetic wave propagation in reciprocal and lossless media to localize radiating sources. Time-reversed measurements are back-propagated in a simulated domain and converge to the unknown source location. The ...

Wave breaking is a complex physical process about which open questions remain. For some applications, it is critical to include breaking effects in phase-resolved envelope-based wave models such as the non-linear Schr & ouml;dinger. A promising approach is ...

Stoichiometric silicon nitride is a highly regarded platform for its favorable attributes, such as low propagation loss and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology, making it a prominent choice for various linear and nonlinear ...

Antennas have historically been the most common electromagnetic (EM) technology for wireless communication systems. Antenna as hardware is entirely dependent on the EM properties of the materials used, mostly related to the permittivity and permeability. I ...

In this thesis, we conduct a comprehensive investigation into structural instabilities of both elastic and magneto-elastic beams and shells, resulting in a creative proposal to design a programmable braille reader. Methodologically, we combine numerical si ...
