vanishing viscosity, networks. This work has received funding from the Alexander von Humboldt-Professorship program, the Transregio 154 Project "Mathematical Modelling, Simulation and Optimization Using the Example of Gas Networks" of the DFG, the grant PI ...

The stress on the environment is increasing as the human population living on it increases. Water eutrophication, a leading cause of impairment of many freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems in the world, is a typical consequence of anthropogenic pressur ...

The ability of dataflow circuits to implement dynamic scheduling promises to overcome the conservatism of static scheduling techniques that high-level synthesis tools typically rely on. Yet, the same distributed control mechanism that allows dataflow circu ...

The increasing availability of extensive and accurate clinical data is rapidly shaping cardiovascular care by improving the understanding of physiological and pathological mechanisms of the cardiovascular system and opening new frontiers in designing thera ...

Environmental pollutants including emerging contaminants are a growing concern worldwide. Organic wastes, such as food waste, compost, animal manure, crop residues, and sludge are generally used as feedstock. The conventional treatment methodologies (prima ...

Decades of uranium-related activities such as ore mining, nuclear power generation, weapon manufacture, storage of nuclear wastes, have contributed to the release of U in the environment. U occurrence is concerning, since in surface environments, U is typi ...

Hexavalent chromium is among the most common and hazardous inorganic contaminants in soils and groundwater. A promising in situ bioremediation approach is the delivery of electron donors to stimulate microbially mediated Cr(VI) reduction, producing relativ ...

Large amounts of toxic metals are discharged into rivers and lakes, but little is known about the factors that drive the adsorption and transformation of these metals in the hyporheic zone and the exchange flux across the sediment-water interface. To bette ...

Five years in the making, a massive oil spill of 1 million barrels is imminent in the Red Sea off the coast of Yemen. Emergent action must be taken by the United Nations and its International Maritime Organization (IMO) to remove the oil, despite regional ...

Surface sediments can accumulate contaminants that affect microorganisms and invertebrates and disturb benthic ecological functions. However, effects of contaminants on ecological functions supported by sediment communities are understudied. Here, we teste ...

Coastal reservoir provides the additional storage capacity of freshwater in coastal zone which greatly alleviate the water shortage in stressed areas, and the salinization of reservoir water degrade the utility of coastal reservoir. Salinization may result ...

Colloids moving from the stream into the hyporheic zone may have a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems as they are potential contaminants or carriers of contaminants. Moreover, retained colloids in the hyporheic zone could not only reduce the exchange fl ...

The extent, mechanism(s), and rate of chlorinated ethene degradation in a large tetrachloroethene (PCE) plume were investigated in an extensive sampling campaign. Multiple lines of evidence for this degradation were explored, including compound-specific is ...

Proliferative kidney disease (PKD) is a high-mortality pathology affecting freshwater salmonid populations in Europe and North America. Its causative agent, the myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, has a complex life-cycle exploiting freshwater bryozoan ...

Understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of endemic infections is of critical importance for a deeper understanding of pathogen transmission, and for the design of more efficient public health strategies. However, very few studies in this domain have foc ...

Mathematical and numerical modelling of the cardiovascular system is a research topic that has attracted remarkable interest from the mathematical community because of its intrinsic mathematical difficulty and the increasing impact of cardiovascular diseas ...

Bioremediation of tetra-and trichloroethene-contaminated aquifers is requently hampered due to incomplete dechlorination to the more toxic dichloroethene (DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), indicating insufficient knowledge about the biological mechanisms relat ...

Identification of mathematical models is an important task for the design and the optimization of biokinetic processes. Monod or Tessier growth-rate models are often chosen by default, although these models are not able to represent the dynamics of all bac ...

Municipal wastewaters are contaminated by a wide range of chemicals, from surfactants to heavy metals, including pharmaceutical residues, personal care products, various household chemicals, and biocides/pesticides. Their release into the environment, wher ...

Benzotriazoles (BTs) and benzothiazoles (BTHs) are extensively used chemicals found in a wide range of household and industrial products. They are chemically stable and are therefore ubiquitous in the aquatic environment. The present study focuses on the p ...
