Background: Reproductive isolation can result from adaptive processes (e.g., ecological speciation and mutation-order speciation) or stochastic processes such as "system drift" model. Ecological speciation predicts barriers to gene flow between populations ...

Owing to stochastic fluctuations arising from finite population size, known as genetic drift, the ability of a population to explore a rugged fitness landscape depends on its size. In the weak mutation regime, while the mean steady-state fitness increases ...

Animal locomotion is the result of complex and multi-layered interactions between the nervous system, the musculo-skeletal system and the environment. Decoding the underlying mechanisms requires an integrative approach. Comparative experimental biology has ...

The accurate investigation of many geophysical phenomena via direct numerical simulations is computationally not possible nowadays due to the huge range of spatial and temporal scales to be resolved. Therefore advances in this field rely on the development ...

The study of insular populations was key in the development of evolutionary theory. The successful colonisation of an island depends on the geographic context, and specific characteristics of the organism and the island, but also on stochastic processes. A ...

The Montecristo wild goat is an endangered feral population that has been on the homonymous island in the Tuscan Archipelago since ancient times. The origins of Montecristo goats are still debated, with authors dating their introduction either back to Neol ...

Even though the Arctic is remote, aerosol properties observed there are strongly influenced by anthropogenic emissions from outside the Arctic. This is particularly true for the so-called Arctic haze season (January through April). In summer (June through ...

The acidity of aqueous atmospheric solutions is a key parameter driving both the partitioning of semi-volatile acidic and basic trace gases and their aqueous-phase chemistry. In addition, the acidity of atmospheric aqueous phases, e.g., deliquesced aerosol ...

In the context of learning from demonstration (LfD), trajectory policy representations such as probabilistic movement primitives (ProMPs) allow for rich modeling of demonstrated skills. To reproduce a learned skill with a real robot, a feedback controller ...

This work demonstrates the first 3D printed wearable motor-sensory module prototype designed for facial rehabilitation, focusing on facial paralysis. The novelty of the work lies in the fast fabrication of the first fully soft working prototype, including ...

By combining well-established population genetic theory with high-throughput sequencing data from natural populations, major strides have recently been made in understanding how, why, and when vertebrate populations evolve crypsis. Here, we focus on backgr ...

We investigate the evolutionary rescue of a microbial population in a gradually deteriorating environment, through a combination of analytical calculations and stochastic simulations. We consider a population destined for extinction in the absence of mutan ...

The fixation probability of a single mutant invading a population of residents is among the most widely-studied quantities in evolutionary dynamics. Amplifiers of natural selection are population structures that increase the fixation probability of advanta ...

Humans control balance using different feedback loops involving the vestibular system, the visual system, and proprioception. In this article, we focus on proprioception and explore the contribution of reflexes based on force and length feedback to standin ...

Resonant sensors based on micro- and nano-electro mechanical systems (M/NEMS) are ubiquitous in many sensing applications due to their outstanding performance capabilities, which are directly proportional to the quality factor (Q) of the devices. We addres ...

Populations of mobile agents-animal groups, robot swarms, or crowds of people-self-organize into a large diversity of states as a result of information exchanges with their surroundings. While in many situations of interest the motion of the agents is driv ...

A feedback control design is proposed for stochastic systems with finite second moment which aims at maximising the region of attraction of the equilibrium point. Polynomial Chaos (PC) expansions are employed to represent the stochastic closed loop system ...

Human activities are resulting in many land-use changes, particularly due to urbanisation and intensification of agricultural practices. Because of these changes, in addition to climate change, many species are facing habitat degradation. In order to avoid ...

This article proposes a new clock-dependent gain-scheduled dynamic output feedback controller for delayed linear parameter varying systems with piecewise constant parameters. The proposed controller guarantees Script capital L2-performance. By employing a ...

In daily adaptive proton therapy (DAPT), the treatment plan is re-optimized on a daily basis. It is a straightforward idea to incorporate information from the previous deliveries during the optimization to refine this daily proton delivery. A feedback sign ...
