The natural next step in improving the realistic experience in multimedia services is interactive multiview video (IMV). IMV promises to enable the users to freely navigate through a scene by selecting their preferred viewpoints from any view position for ...

Multi-view video transmission poses great challenges because of its data size and dimension. Therefore, how to design efficient 3D scene representations and coding (of luminance and geometry) has become a critical research topic. Recently, the graph-based ...

The problem of successive refinement in distributed source coding and in joint source-channel coding is considered. The emphasis is placed on the case where the sources have to be recovered losslessly in the second stage. In distributed source coding, it i ...

In this paper, we design a new approach for coding the geometry information in a multiview image scenario. As an alternative to depth-based schemes, we propose a representation that captures the dependencies between pixels in different frames in the form o ...

Vision sensor networks and video cameras find widespread usage in several applications that rely on effective representation of scenes or analysis of 3D information. These systems usually acquire multiple images of the same 3D scene from different viewpoin ...

The distributed representation of correlated images is an important challenge in applications such as multi-view imaging in camera networks or low complexity video coding. This paper addresses the problem of distributed coding of images whose correlation i ...

The Video Tool Library (VTL) is one of the major normative components of the Reconfigurable Video Coding (RVC) standard. It specifies the set of functional units (FUs)that may be interchangeably combined and connected to form different video codecs, with v ...

Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is a new paradigm for video compression based on the information theoretical results of Slepian-Wolf (SW) and Wyner-Ziv (WZ). In this work, a performance analysis of image and video coding schemes based on DVC are presented, ...

In this paper, an efficient H.264/AVC baseline encoder, described in RVC-CAL actor language, is introduced. The main aim of the paper is two folds: a) to demonstrate the flexibility and ease that is provided by RVC-CAL, which allows for efficient implement ...

Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is based on a new paradigm in coding, which has received many interests recently. Among other features, DVC is said to provide better error resiliency. This paper proposes a hybrid spatial and temporal error concealment schem ...

Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is a new paradigm for video compression based on the information theoretical results of Slepian and Wolf (SW), and Wyner and Ziv (WZ). While conventional coding has a rigid complexity allocation as most of the complex tasks a ...

Latest developments in video coding technology on one side, and a continuous growth in size and bandwidth in lossy networks on the other side, have undoubtedly created a whole new world of multimedia communications. However, nowadays networks, which are be ...

The addition of a feedback link to a discrete memoryless channel does not increase its capacity, but it does bring with it other benefits. One of these benefits is an increase to the best achievable error exponent. In the first part of this thesis we revis ...

In this work, a performance evaluation of AVC Intra and JPEG2000 in terms of rate-distortion performance is conducted. A set of High Definition sequences with different spatial resolutions is used for this purpose. Results obtained show quite competitive p ...

This paper addresses the problem of compact representation of a 3D scene, captured by distributed omnidirectional cameras. As the images from the sensors are likely to be correlated in most practical scenarios, we build a distributed algorithm based on cod ...

This paper presents a highly flexible video coding scheme (MP3D), based on the use of a redundant 3-D spatio-temporal dictionary of functions. Directionality and anisotropic scaling are key ingredients to the spatial components, that form a rich collection ...

This paper discusses robust coding of visual content for a distributed multimedia system. The system encodes independently two correlated video signals and reconstructs them jointly at a central decoder. The video signals are captured from a dynamic scene ...

Multi-State Video Coding (MSVC) is a multiple description scheme based on frame-wise splitting of the video sequence into two or more subsequences. Each subsequence is encoded separately to generate descriptions which can be decoded independently. Due to s ...

This paper presents a progressive coding scheme for 3-D objects, based on overcomplete signal expansions on the 2-D sphere. Due to increased freedom in the basis construction, redundant expansions have shown interesting approximation properties in the deco ...

Video signals are sequences of natural images, where images are often modeled as piecewise-smooth signals. Hence, video can be seen as a 3D piecewise-smooth signal made of piecewise-smooth regions that move through time. Based on the piecewise-smooth model ...
