This thesis investigates the magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules adsorbed on thin magnesium oxide decoupling layers, grown on a silver single crystal. To address these systems experimentally, we use a low temperature scanning tunneling micros ...

The properties of a physical system only exist in relation to its environment. This thesis presents the development of a novel spin qubit scanning probe microscope operating over a wide range of environmental conditions. The qubit, which sits at the heart ...

We present a numerical study of three fully baffled L-mode TCV discharges with three different values of the outer strike-point major radius/total flux expansion, showing that the beneficial effect of large strike point radius is partially screened in thes ...

The continuous reduction of the structural size in nanotechnology slowed down over the last decade, approaching the natural limit of single atoms as building blocks of matter. Therefore, intensive research is directed toward exploring new frontiers, in par ...

The subject of the present work is discovery and in-depth characterization of a new class of functional materials. Tuning of the bond polarity and orbital occupation with a goal of establishing balance between localization and delocalization of electrons - ...

We investigate the mechanics of bistable, hard-magnetic, elastic beams, combining experiments, finite-element modelling (FEM) and a reduced-order theory. The beam is made of a hard magneto-rheological elastomer, comprising two segments with antiparallel ma ...

We report neutron scattering measurements on YbMnSb2 which shed light on the nature of the magnetic moments and their interaction with Dirac fermions. Using half-polarized neutron diffraction we measured the field-induced magnetization distribution in the ...

We develop a reduced-order model for thin plates made of hard magnetorheological elastomers (hard-MREs), which are composed of hard-magnetic particles embedded in a polymeric matrix. First, we propose a new magnetic potential, as an alternative to an exist ...

Further miniaturisation of magnetic storage devices requires an advent of new types of magnets, since classical ferromagnetic materials show lack of remanence at nano- and subnanoscale. A single atom can represent the smallest possible bit of information. ...

Magnetic thin films and magnetic nanostructures have become essential components of modern technological applications. Modern branches of magnetisms focus on spin-charge coupling (spintronics) and the collective excitation of spin waves in magnetically ord ...

This thesis presents a combined experimental and theoretical study of the classical and quantum magnetization dynamics in single magnetic adatoms and molecules, and on the classical and quantum coherent control thereof. First, a detailed description of t ...

Magnons (spin waves, SWs) are elementary spin excitations in magnetically ordered materials. They are the promising quanta for the transmission and processing of information. Magnons can be coupled to the electromagnetic waves utilized for the wireless com ...

Permalloy Ni80Fe20 is one of the key magnetic materials in the field of magnonics. Its potential would be further unveiled if it could be deposited in three dimensional (3D) architectures of sizes down to the nanometer. Atomic Layer Deposition, ALD, is the ...

Numerical models that can simulate coupled geometric instabilities in steel beam-columns are required for the seismic assessment of certain steel moment-resisting frames. Reliably simulating coupled instabilities requires that the steel material is precise ...

This Thesis is mainly devoted to the exploration of the structural disorder and magnetic order in two-dimensional crystals by means of first-principles methodologies. Firstly, we present a comparative study of defect formation in the semiconducting 2H and ...

Atomistic-continuum multiscale modelling is becoming an increasingly popular tool for simulating the behaviour of materials due to its computational efficiency and reliable accuracy. In the case of ferromagnetic materials, the atomistic approach handles th ...

The magnetic and structural properties of polycrystalline Co4-xNixNb2O9 (x = 1, 2) have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction, magnetization and heat capacity measurements, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. For x = 1, the compound ...

The discovery of ferromagnetism in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals has generated widespread interest. Making further progress in this area requires quantitative knowledge of the magnetic properties of vdW magnets at the nanoscale. We used ...

Iron phthalocyanine (FePc) is a molecular semiconductor whose building blocks are 1D ferromagnetic chains. It is shown that its optical and magnetic properties are controlled by the growth strategy, obtaining extremely high coercivities of over 1 T and mod ...

In the past decade, the engineering community has conceived, manufactured and tested micro-swimmers, i.e. microscopic devices which can be steered in their intended environment. Foreseen applications range from microsurgery and targeted drug delivery to en ...
