Objective. Cardiac arrhythmias are a leading cause of mortality worldwide. Wearable devices based on photoplethysmography give the opportunity to screen large populations, hence allowing for an earlier detection of pathological rhythms that might reduce th ...

The sensing of left ventricular (LV) activity is fundamental in the diagnosis and monitoring of cardiovascular health in high-risk patients after cardiac surgery to achieve better short- and long-term outcome. Conventional approaches rely on noninvasive me ...

Sedentary lifestyle is currently considered a global pandemic, associated with major health problems such as cardiovascular disease and premature death. Regular physical activity (PA) is one way to address this problem, as it brings a variety of health ben ...

Mechano-electric feedbacks (MEFs), which model how mechanical stimuli are transduced into electrical signals, have received sparse investigation by considering electromechanical simulations in simplified scenarios. In this paper, we study the effects of di ...

Continuous and reliable cardiac function monitoring could improve medication adherence in patients at risk of heart failure. This work presents an innovative implantable Fiber Bragg Grating-based soft sensor designed to sense mechanical cardiac activity. T ...

Imaging methods to capture the beating and developing heart inside embryonic animal models such as the zebrafish are a key component for the study of fundamental biological processes such as cardiac birth defects or tissue regeneration. However, live heart ...

Purpose: Silent brain infarcts (SBI) are frequently detected in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), but it is unknown whether SBI are linked to autonomic dysfunction. We aimed to explore the association of autonomic dysfunction with SBI in AF patients. ...

Background Impaired heart rate variability (HRV) is associated with increased mortality in sinus rhythm. However, HRV has not been systematically assessed in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). We hypothesized that parameters of HRV may be predictive o ...

BACKGROUND The isthmus of ventricular tachycardia (VT) circuits has been extensively characterized. Few data exist regarding the contribution of the outer loop (OL) to the VT circuit. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to characterize the electrophysi ...

Microscopy of the beating heart in embryos provides key insights for the study of its development. However, achieving a sufficiently high framerate is difficult with conventional cameras. Here, we present a method to reconstruct an image sequence covering ...

Photoplethysmography (PPG)-based monitoring devices will probably play a decisive role in healthcare environment of the future, which will be preventive, predictive, personalized and participatory. Indeed, this optical technology presents several practical ...

Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is a type of cardiac arrhythmia that significantly increases the risk of stroke and heart failure. In general, in the case of patients affected by AF, their electrocardiogram (ECG) shows a typical pattern of irregular RR intervals ...

A system for measuring blood pressure of a user that comprises an ElectroCardioGram (ECG) circuit with at least two ECG electrodes configured to obtain an electrical activity of a heart of the user by measuring the electrical signals detected at the at lea ...

The purpose of this study was to develop algorithms to lower the incidence of false arrhythmia alarms in the ICU using information from independent sources, namely electrocardiogram (ECG), arterial blood pressure (ABP) and photoplethysmogram (PPG). Our app ...

As part of the 2015 PhysioNet/CinC Challenge, this work aims at lowering the number of false alarms, which are a persistent concern in the intensive care unit. The multimodal database consists of 1250 life-threatening alarm recordings, each categorized as ...

Today there is a growing interest in the integration of health monitoring applications in portable devices necessitating the development of methods that improve the energy efficiency of such systems. In this paper, we present a systematic approach that ena ...

Smart Wireless Body Sensor Nodes (WBSNs) are a novel class of unobtrusive, battery-powered devices allowing the continuous monitoring and real-time interpretation of a subject's bio-signals, such as the electrocardiogram (ECG). These low-power platforms, w ...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common encountered cardiac rhythm disorder (arrhythmia) in clinical practice. It is responsible for about one third of arrhythmia-related hospitalizations. This arrhythmia, which increases in prevalence with age, leads ...

Multiple organization indices have been used to predict the outcome of stepwise catheter ablation in long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), however with limited success. Our study aims at developing innovative organization indices from baseline ...

Wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) have recently evolved to include a fair amount of computational power, so that advanced signal processing algorithms can now be embedded even in this extremely low-power platforms. An increasingly successful field of applicatio ...
